How do you update your gps...my model is Garmin 205. I went to the Garmin site and the price is $65. Will they send me a new unit? I see no where on the GPS where I would add any kind of cord or anything so.....how does it work?

Try resetting the unit by pressing the reset button or on the newer 205's , turn off the power button then turn back on but hold the button for about 15 seconds till it reboots again. This should reset your unit. You should go to the Garmin site and update your unit. I will attach a link to the Garmin site. It will explain the update process and you can also find a copy of the owners manual if needed.

Make sure that your 205 is fully charged and that the usb cable is plugged directly into a usb port on your computer and not thru a usb hub.

If you are referring to updating the firmware, you should go to Garmin's website, www.garmin.com and download the WebUpdater software first. Once that is installed, plug your unit into your computer and then run the software.

The only battery replacement instructions are on page 65 of the owners manual:

First try shutting down your firewall then try. The update could be to big for your unit. Try updating buy smaller sizes.

When a Garmin Nuvi 205 stops working or behaves strangely, there are two steps you can take yourself to try and get it going again:

1. Perform a Hard Reset,
2. Run WebUpdater to reinstall the firmware.

I find that hard to be true. The manufactuer just came out with updates for the Nuvi 3xx and 6xx this month (Aug 09) and those models are older than your Nuvi 205W. When you mean updates are you referring to firmware or maps? Either way, even the discontinued models are still being supported with firmware & map updates.

I went to the web site. For a update there wasnt much of one. Its a firmware update. And you need to have the unit hooked to the computer. Mine automatally went to the site and got a list of things you could update, but in my case there was nothing to download. But the web site for the GPS has all of the answers

Most GPS problems - Hangs, frozen screens, problems acquiring satellites, ETC, can be attributed to the device not having the latest firmware installed.
This firmware enables it to communicate with the satellites - but if they aren't speaking the same language they get confused easily. For Garmin GPS Automotive units, Garmin has you do the following before sending it in for repairs:
1 - SOFT RESET
2 - HARD RESET (CLICK HERE to see instructions for either reset)
3 - UPDATE the device using their WebUpdater software (CLICK HERE for that) Garmin is the only company that offers repairs AFTER the warranty has expired. They offer a FLAT RATE REPAIR service for units no longer in warranty. For Other GPS units please consult your owner's manual or their support site - as each model - and even manufacture dates - can lead to different reset procedures. TomTom

Instead - they have an exchange program to update to a new UNIT for around the same price as a repair would be. CLICK HERE for more on that. WARRANTY on most GPS devices is 1 year from the date of purchase. Broken screens are considered ABUSE - and not covered under warranty. Finally - If your unit is on the charger for HOURS, You've tried both the car AND USB type charger, and you turn it on... it stays on for a minute (or so) then powers down or never comes on at all - the battery has lost it's ability to hold a charge and must be replaced. Looking around YouTube - you can get a tutorial on how to CAREFULLY crack open just about any GPS. The tool(s) necessary typically are included with the battery purchase. Typically batteries run about $25 +/-. NiCd batteries are meant to be energized once a month so they keep active, and don't build up deposits that lead to their premature failure.
