Garmin Support has stated that a fully discharged battery can only be recharged from a computer USB connection, i.e. car 12V and AC adapter do not work. Make sure that your USB computer cable has a true mini-USB connector which conforms to the USB standard, i.e. with a 5-pin connector. There are cheap cables available in many stores which do not conform to the USB standard and have only 4 pins - look for the official USB logo on the packaging to be sure that you get the 5-pin connection.

Note also that a computer USB connection is only a trickle charge, with 500mA available at best, if no other devices are attached to the same USB Root Hub, so leave it connected for 2-3 hours to be sure.

My Garmin Nuvi 260 is not on the recall list but will not charge or stay on - it does start up but after allegedly loading the maps, it turns off

The recall is for an overheating battery issue which can potentially cause a fire. Your problem is totally unrelated and is most likely simply due to the rechargeable battery being exhausted.

Replacing the battery is supposed to be a Garmin service centre job, but they charge silly money for it. Do it yourself instead, click here for a free instructional video.

Good luck, please take a moment to rate my reply.

The USB port on the NUVI 260 is loose and will not charge

You will not be able to refasten it yourself. This is a surface mount part and you need a very small tip soldering iron to fix it, plus you ned to know how to modify it so it wont break again. Please see this link:

Garmin nuvi 260w not operating while plugged in

Based on your description, you are doing it right. You said....
"when i connect it to the car charger it shows the computer sysmbol and starts charging. there is no other usb port on the device"
That is correct. It takes about 2-3 hours to fully charge a low battery.
There is only a mini USB port on a 260.
It's used for charging and downloading updates of software or maps.
