Quite often this is due to grease or food particles stuck to the inside of the oven or stuck on or behind the waveguide cover.

The waveguide cover is usually about the size of a playing card and often held in place by a plastic rivet.

In some models it is a larger stirrer cover type made of thicker plastic in the ceiling of the oven.

It can be fragile, and the metal edges of the oven behind it can be sharp, so be careful!

The cover and the metal behind it should be cleaned with a mild, non-ammonia cleaner.

If the cavity metal of the oven is chipped or charred, it will have to be sanded smooth and clean and dried thoroughly.

Then you can apply some high-temperature appliance paint, available from places like Wal-Mart, Lowe's or Builder's Square.

If your waveguide cover is burned, it will need to be replaced. It provides important protection for the magnetron.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

My GE microwave is starting to arc, You can see the arcs on the plate (I believe it is the wave guide cover) on the right side interior. Burn marks are evident on teh plate. Is it the waveguide cover or...

Some units use a plastic or fiberglass cover over the wave guide where the microwaves are dumped into the oven cavity. If this cover gets coated with food/grease, or soaks up grease, it can arc, or catch fire. If unit is still operating properly otherwise, I would suggest replacing the cover. You need to inspect the wave guide, also, to make sure it is still intact, and there are no cracks in it that would allow microwave radiation to escape.

The magnetron is getting to hot and will eventually fail, especially when it is arcing, "a safety issue convern" the cause is the part mentioned above, or there is exposed metal on the inside cavity.

Turn microwave for 3sec after it start arking noise

Take warm soapy water and clean until spotless, food partical build up will cause arcing, if no change! the microwave hood is a another trouble spot, if any bare metal is showing it will arc and need to be replaced, if everything checks out the magnetron is bad and will eventually fail.

Microwave is arcing and making a popping noise as if something metal was in there while cooking.

I will assume that you do not have any metal items or bits of tinfoil lying around inside the oven.

If the sparks are happening on the inside of the microwave's cooking area while you are cooking, then make sure you clean the inner surfaces really well. Be sure to remove any cooked on food particles that may have splashed up during cooking.

Most likely you have some corrosion or dried food debris inside the cooking area, or perhaps even some food particles stuck to your WAVEGUIDE COVER PLATE. A dirty waveguide cover plate can certainly cause the arcing and sparking you describe.

If the thorough cleaning does not work, you may need to replace the waveguide cover. Here is a link to a short video that shows you exactly how to replace the wave guide cover yourself:

Just use your mouse to click on the link, which is the underlined and highlighted text just above. This will open a new web browser page automatically for you and allow you to view the video at the website indicated.

If the sparks are coming from somewhere other that the cooking area, then your unit may need more significant electrical repairs or service.

After running for around 5-10 seconds, a large "spark" can be seen arcing inside the microwave accompanied by a "shorting out" sound.

It is the magnetron that is arcing and potentially very dangerous, the magnetron is failing or there is exposed metal or to much food particle build up. I suggest unplugging the unit and have it checked out for safety reasons.

Sparkscome from food (no metal involved) and heating VERY quickly!

Arcing in or above oven chamberThere is often a simple cause:

  • Arcing in the oven chamber with a normal load (a cup of water, for example), often just indicates that a thorough cleaning of the oven chamber is needed, particularly around and inside/above the waveguide cover. Any food that gets trapped here will eventually burn and carbonize resulting in a focal point for further arcing. Usually, the waveguide cover is designed to be removable without taking the (cabinet) cover off of the oven. However, burnt food and carbon often make this difficult so that some disassembly will be required. See the sections: "SAFETY" and "Getting inside a microwave oven".
for more information see "Arcing in or above oven chamber" section of online Microwave Repair Manual.
If the microwave is clean, please post a reply and I will look at it again (this time include a model # and/or approx manufacture date)

COATING ON INSIDE OF MICROWAVE HAS STARTED TO COME OFF, EXPOSING UNDERNEATH SURFACE, IS IT STILL SAFE TO USE AND EAT FOOD COOKED IN IT?

Nothing special in there. As long as the paint is not flaking into the food you are ok, Be aware that bare metal could begin to arc. There is special microwave paint available but it will not match and look bad unless you redo the entire interior.

Arcing... can I still use the oven?

The microwave energy is not ionizing radiation, so the real risk is further arcing and possible fire.

The cavity will have to be sanded smooth and clean and dried thoroughly.

Then you can apply some high-temperature appliance paint, available from places like Wal-Mart, Lowe's or Builder's Square.

Do not put any metallic objects or substances in side the oven . It will produce arcing inside the oven. Take care in future.

System Arcs and Makes Electrical buzzing sounds

If it weren't brand new, I'd suspect arcing due to grease or food particle buildup on or under the stirrer (if equipped) or waveguide cover, or the turntable area.

But since it's new, I would suspect that the stirrer or another part may have been damaged or misaligned in shipping.

Your best bet with a new one is to get it replaced.

It's hard to put a price on peace of mind.
