AC shutting down, not cooling

Yesterday, the fan outside shut down, and no cool air was coming out of any vent. I turned the thermostat to fan only, thinking that something might have frozen, hoping it would defrost, but 4 hours later, i hit the reset button on the fan, it started up, theni switched the thermo back to cool. It seemed to work for 5 minutes, then the outside fan shut down again...no more cool air. This morning I jumped in the attic to see if the filter was dirty, and I found NO FILTER INTALLED. I rent, so my investigative possibilities are limited. This system is 2 yrs old, put in when the landlord bought the property. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

If you say its 2-years old, get it fully repaired and checked out right while its still under warranty, some units has only 3-years warranty.

Your landlord needs a service tech !sounds like you have a few issues.possibilities include control issue, plugged evap coil, plugged blower wheel, possible freon issue. This one's a little too big to handle here.

Why is my air conditioner unit only running properly on cool days? when its hot out it only runs about 5 mins at a time then shuts off to fan and dont come back on for another 20 mins.

Do you hear a click sound as the compressor shuts down? If so that is the clixon (heat sensitive circuit breaker) that is opening and shutting down the compressor when it overheats. You have not had the AC filled with refrigerant so overfilling the unit cannot be an issue.
And if it is not overfilled overheating is caused by excessive current going into the motor which could indicate a problem with the motor windings..

OR, If the thermostat is faulty it could be prematurely shutting down the compressor. If you jump (bypass) the therm and unit does not shut off then you have found the culprit.

Ac unit runs, inside blower shuts off after 2 mins, compressor continues to run, t-stat still calling for cool

My central AC unit decided to stop on the hottest day of the year. It would start and run normally for a few minutes and then the blower would shut off. After checking the breakers, thermostat and overflow shut off (did not have one) I saw something about a blower motor capacitor. This was easy to get to and replace and my last hope before waiting for someone to come fix it. The capacitor cost $4.04 with tax and had my AC working again. Needless to say I was beyond happy. I hope this can help others with a similar problem.

Air conditioner unit outside, fan not going but air is coming out of the vents. The thermostat is on 50 degrees. If it is shut off for a while and turned back on it will turn on but after and hour it will...

is the fan out side running when you are getting cool air? IF so check the out door coill is it clean, If not the fan could be over heating because it is pulling to hard. you should be able to feel the air 2' above the unit.

Lennox air unit not blowing cold air

your fan motor outside is going bad, have a service company change it out for you.

the motor stopped working and that overheated the compressor shutting it down on thermal cutout, and it will only come on once it cools down

Air conditioner is not cooling. The fan is running. When I turn the thermostat past 7, the unit shuts down. Any ideas? Low on Freon?

Sounds like a leak to me - if you have a set of guages available (know anyone working in the refrigeration field???) you could tell this for certain.  Otherwise, try running it when it cools down outside and see what happens.  Take a stick thermometer, and put it in between the fins on the INSIDE condenser coil.  If they get cooler, but not down to about 50 degrees, then you are low on refrigerant.
Good Luck!

Blower Turns off if ac unit comes on. No air coming through vents

This only could 1--2 things, a bad circuit board fan relay or bad thermostat. To check for bad thermostat, take off the front cover to reveal the 4-wire terminial and jump the red-wire (power)-cool,(yellow -y or blue)--- green--fan white-(heat)..........red to yellow-or y=cool. Thank-you-very-much!

My AC unit keeps freezing up on the copper lines going into the house from the outside unit. It also freezes up on the inside lines and the air is not cooling my home down.

Operate your air conditioner with the fan in the on position. But first turn the fan on, turn the temp up or shut the cooling off. Your coil is more than likely frozen over. At night when outside temperature drops the refrigerant pressure and temperature in the system also drops. This action can cause icing of the cooling coil, with the fan in automatic everything shuts down at the end of a cooling cycle. Thus no air movement to melt ice on previous cooling cycle.

Cooling

Check if the condensar ( outside fan unit) is getting enough free ventilation. IF there is no free air flow you will mostlikely be triping the unit due to short cycling. Ie the unit is pulling its own discherge air causing the compressor to trip due to high back pressure
