Touchpad suddenly stopped working. I suspect my cat stepped on keyboard to cause this problem

I have looked online to try and find a user manual - but had no luck - found averatec but not the model listed
I suspect, like a lot of other laptops, i suspect one of the F keys across the top disables the touch pad - It maybe a combination of keys like FN + F - I know the toshiba uses F9 to toggle the touchpad on/off
have a look at that possibility .

My averatec 3700 laptop is not performing properly. When the computer is powered on, I hear the fans as usual; the "Averatec'' screen flashes for a couple of seconds; then the screen goes black. I can...

Does not sound good, the onboard video chip is more than likely fried. all you can do now is try plugging in a external monitor and see if that port still works. You may try replacing the LCD inverter board, but I don't think it will help.

Black Screen

The first thing I would do after turning the computer on is check to see if the video output is being directed to the LCD screen. The output can be directed using the Fn key along with the key with the picture of the 2 monitors on the Function keys at the top of the keyboard. Hold down the Fn key and tap the other key once or twice,
Next, hook the computer up to an external monitor. Do the same thing with the Fn key to see if it's the LCD screen.
If the external monitor works, then you haven't correctly hooked up the LCD screen or it's bad.

Averatec 3700 hard drive

The hard drive is located under the plastics on the right below keyboard. Accessing is a pain and a bit of trial and error.

If the system crashed, I would use a linux live cd like PUPPY
to transfer what files you want to a flash drive then use the recovery partition to restore to factory settings.

if you need the distribution of puppy I can e-mail it to you or you can google it and download it. Live cd's load into ram memory and once loaded you "mount" the hard drive access it and copy files to a "mounted" flash drive.

The recovery partition is accessed by one of the function keys

Keyboard

Those keys are your function keys. They might be stuck, try turning num lock on and off. Check the manual, page 18, follow this link http://www.averatec.com/docs/3200_Series_Manual.pdf Hope this helps
