Fan not running and a clicking sound. GE said approx $350 to fix (phone quote). The fridge is just 2 1/2 years old!

  • Anonymous Dec 01, 2008

I have a different model, just 3 years old and had to pay $315 to get a new motherboard today, GE needs to do something about this.

I have the same problem, our motherboard went and the fridge is just 3 years old. I had to pay $315 to fix it today.

I have the same issue, too. Does replacing the motherboard work?

  • Anonymous Dec 20, 2008

    We have the same problem...

Click of death - water/ice through door light dims, nothing is dispensed, clicking starts, cooling stops.

Put a call into 1-800-GE-CARES, they confirm there is a replacement program but cannot guarantee that the $79.99 service call will be covered just by description over the phone. Welcome to Vegas - $80 for a service call that _might_ give a free repair, or might tell you that you need to spend another $250 vs $800 for a decent new fridge that probably will run for 20 years without problem.....

I had the same problem back in March. First the water and ice dispensers stopped working, then the clicking started and the compressor wouldn't turn on. I replaced the circuit board and everything started working again, until today. This is a very common problem with the circuit board on these refrigerators. Do a search for "GE circuit board" and you'll see what I mean. GE issued a service bulletin to its technicians that this service should be provided free of charge, and anyone who already paid to have the circuit board replaced will be reimbursed. I wish I would've known about it 6 months ago. I will be calling GE Consumer Affairs on Monday to get this resolved.

    Here's the bulletin:

    November 7, 2006

    Dear GE Customer Care Servicers,

GE Consumer & Industrial places a very high priority on product quality and customer satisfaction and thus continuously assesses our product reliability. Recent analysis has discovered a potential problem with the main circuit board on a limited number of refrigerator models, which could lead to lower than anticipated life expectancy on that component. Therefore, if the main circuit board fails, GE Consumer & Industrial will replace this part free of charge to the consumer until further notice.

    Models Covered: see attachment

The models affected are side-by-side plastic liner, side-by-side metal liner, bottom freezer two door and bottom freezer French door. The models were produced between May 2005 and August 2006 (HH – RL serial range) and are included in this program. See enclosed list.

    Potential Additional Covered Parts:

Specific parts involving the failure of the main board are included in this program. These parts are limited to the following:

-Evaporator Fan failure, only if accompanied by a Main Board failure

-Dispenser Board failure, only if accompanied by a Main Board failure

The main board part number in cases in WR55X10552. Please use your normal warranty MA00 job code for this repair. If you encounter an evaporator fan or dispenser board failure due to the above main board, please include on your invoice and use the normal MA00 job code. It is critical that you verify the proper functioning of the unit including the evaporator fan motor and dispenser board before leaving the home to avoid a repeat call.

Units may be in or out of the standard 1-year product warranty and both instances are covered under this concession program.

If you previously completed this repair and charged the consumer, please send a copy of the service invoice to General Electric Consumer Relations, PO Box 10736, Norfolk, VA 23513 or fax a copy to 1-877-299-0725 so that we may issue a refund to the consumer.

    Sincerely,

    Richard Zutterman

I fixed my motherboard.

Board WKKT Model 0158-00-04
Board GEA Part 200D4854G013

I replaced both 47uF x 400V capacitors - one of them was bulged. The bad one was open, and the other still had it's nominal value.

I tryed to make the refrigerator work, to no avail.

After a careful inspection, i replaced both 470uF x 25V capacitor (c29 and c30, i guess - near the 7805 regulator). Both had around 0.5% of their original value, and i belive it was the source of the problem.

Everytime the processor tried to start the relay, the power level dropped and the motherboard "rebooted"... and thus the cycles and clicks from the relay.

The refrigerator got back to life!

There was a recall by GE on November, 2006.
Call GE at 18003861215, option 3. Mention the recall and maybe it's still valid a free replacement.

Not sure if the compressor is running. If not, you'll need a repair man. Since fans are running, most likely the thermistor. Also, if you haven't unplug from the wall, wait 10 seconds then plug back in; this may reset the control board. The link below may help. GE Refrigerator Not Cold Enough

Gsh25jsrf side by side ge it is making a buzz clic clic from the back buzz from compressor clic from circuit board came back on after spinning the fan worked for a night then back to noise and not working

it sound like the compressor is overheating and the start relay could be failing because of the holiday and possible not getting a tech out there, pull the frig out from wall and remove the back panel and get an portable fan and let it blow air on compressor to keep it cool, If you here the sound on the covered axcess panel on the back the mother board is questionable. Hope this helps....

Model GSH25JSRF SS The fan in freezer clicking and working intermittley, the augor in the ice machine and the water dispensor are only working part of the time. You can hear a clicking sound as the fan...

On this particular model the fan and all operations are controlled by the main board on the back of your Refrigerator. This is part number wr55x10942. Less than $200.00 and not hard to change out.

GE Model GSH25JSRF SS is clicking non stop, the click comes from a small panel on the back right of the fridge. Started out that the water and ice dispenser didn't dispense. Then the clicking just came...

Is it still cooling? I had an issue where there was a clicking noise from the back panel and the fridge did not cool. Pulling off the panel the noise seemed to from a box on the circuit board. Turns out there was a problem with the controler board and after some research I found that the board was covered under a recall. GE ended up sending a guy out to replace the board at no charge. Pretty cool being that if was after the warranty had expired; but I guess it makes sence since there was a recall. Good luck.

Fridge not cooling, freezer not freezing even on coldest settings

Hi,
From what you are describing, you have a refrigerant leak. The freon has leaked from the system, The compressor will still run and evrything looks fine. To double check you will have to have someone hookup gauges to the system and verify that the charge is lost.
It may be possible to find and repair the leak. This is not always possible as some of the system is virtually inaccessible in many refrigerators.
Make sure if you do have someone repair the system that they evacuate the system very well and do a good vacum test before recharging the system.

This should help you to solve your problem.
Thanks for using Fixya!!
