My CD drive is not working

My CD drive used to work - put in a cd and the laptop (sony viao model VGN-SZ430N) would play the CD or show the pictures. It has not been doing that for two days, and a box comes up that says "insert a cd" although it is already in there. The laptop is working on Windows Vista Business.

- It spins for around 4-5 seconds and then stops, and nothing else comes up.

- I give up. The drive is a Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-842 S ATA device and it says the manufacturer is Microsoft - but I cannot find the driver update anywhere.

Clarification Request

Check in the device manager interface (DMI) to ensure that there are no errors with the drive. 
If you find that there are no errors with the device, then that means that it is not a software issue, meaning most likely your CD ROM drive is broken. If this is the case try taking it to a repair center to confirm that this is true.
If there are issues, then try installing the latest driver for the device.

Also, can you see the drive when you go to "My Computer", with no disc in the drive?

Find out who makes the drive, then go to their website and install the new driver, this should fix it I hope.  If not, post back, and we'll get this fixed.

- Matshita is the manufacturer of your drive so thats that.
