Question about GE (PSS26MSRSS) Side by Side Refrigerator

GE Side by Side Not cooling/freezing

Came home yesterday and found some things in the freezer were defrosted. Shortly after that I did not hear any fan running; and the fan is ALWAYS running on this unit. (It is only 4 yrs old too). About 15 minutes later it started running again. BUT,as of this morning (12 hrs later) the defrosted stuff is still defrosted. The fan is runnning, but not freezing; there is frost/ice in the back of the freezer also. The fridge does not seem to be as cold as it should either. Please help!

I have model GSS22KGMD BB not cooling enough and freezer items are defrosting. Pulled out fridge took off louver and it was filled with dust. cleaned out but motor was HOT and fan was not running. unplugged and plugged back in. after a few minutes I heard the motor and fan run but not that loud. Went to bed. This morning did not hear motor or fan running and it appears that items on the bottom of both the freezer & fridge are cooler (still not cold/frozen enough) than higher items. Help!

I have the same problem. Both the Freezer and Refrigerator just stop cooling. I'm looking for answers and at this stage have decided to replace one item at time looking for the most likely culprit.

Sounds like defrost problem. remove back lower panel in freezer. defrost all ice on coils, this will fix problem temporaily. I`m looking for the tech sheet to test system.

The problem is defrost.

Its defrost problem, the freezer should cool, then freeze, then defrost cycle should start. In your case freezer is cooling, then freezing, but its not defrosting. That's why fridge section is not cooling.-------

Freezer not freezing

If freezer is icing up, you might have a defrost problem. Frost free models have a heating element that is controlled by a timer to automatically defrost ice, defrost timer turns on defrost heating element every 12 hours to melt ice in freezer and allow good air flow.
You can test defrost element with an ohm meter(located inside freezer coils-will have two wires going to a plug connection), if OK replace defrost timer (located in various places depending on make and model

My GE Side by side is not cooling. I believe it is the defrost heater, how do you replace this?

The defrost thermostat is located behind the freezeer firewall, on top of the evaporator.

It is part 240 on the diagram below:

FREEZER WONT FREEZE

Hi, Can you see if there is any frost build up in the freezer? Can you hear the evaporator fan motor running in the freezer? Most common problem is a defrost issue.
Please let me know if I can asstist you further.

Thanks

GE regrigerator not cooling or freezing

first defrost it by turning it off for 1\2 to 1 full day,put towels on the floor to catch the water, when a refridgerator gets frosted up it cant circulate the cold air,and if its one with the freezer on top then the cold air cant blow down into the refridgerator, check inside the refridgerator at the top where the thermostat cover is there will be a vent hole,it could have ice built up so much that its totally blocking the air flow. This usually happens when hot food is put in the refridgerator and causes steam,or the refridgerator runs too much caused by bad door seals,or the cooling fins on the back or bottom underneath plugged with dust and the freon gets too hot causing condensation inside the freezer which causes it to frost up,a plugged drain hole will back up water and freeze, the fan in the freezer may have stopped working, which is about a $60.00 part, and finally a bad defrost element (about a $40.00 part)which is a glass tube inside the freezer with a coiled up wire inside it that heats up at certain times to defrost any ice build up,(which is the last thing to check)

GE GSH25JSTA SS side by side fridge not cooling/freezing

In most cases it is the Defrost timer circuit. One of three things the Defrost time (most likely) it allows the cooling for a 6 to 10 hour period and the defrosting for 10 to 30 minutes to remove ice buildup, ICE BUILDUP is the main problem as it restrict air flow, the cooling air circulation through the system. You see cool air only comes in the freezer side and passes through vents (pass ways) to the refrigerator side. Ice buildup in the freezer side inhibits cooling air to the refrigerator side. You think the freezer is working, but it is only cooler because there is ice in there that you can't see. The Terminator (a LIMIT switch) opens the defrost circuit if the defrost heater gets too hot (second likely) the next is the Heater which heats for those 10 to 30 minutes to melt the ice buildup (least likely) no matter the Unit you have they all have this circuit... Hope this helps, I'm Tango
