It sounds to me like the unit is ready for a replacement screen,There are chips along the edges of the screen and they may have been damaged thus creating black spots where there should be none.

If you can put up with the lines then it will still be usable,
You could use it with an external screen and the laptop will become a desk top with a external screen.

To replace the screen then you will have to source a panel insert from a reliable source,(or another laptop same model,2nd Hand)
when you order the replacement make sure the numbers on the back of the original screen are the same.
To find these numbers then you will have to strip down the unit to get all the info.

SELF INSTALL OF SCREEN.........

Remove the Battery FIRST.
You will need a small screw driver and a clear work space,
There are normally bungs or covers over the screws on the lid around the edge ,
To remove these and slide your finger nails down between the lid and the back of the lid,
this will separate the two covers both front and back.
there may be a cover on the keyboard side of the laptop,
Remove it too.Need to have access to the body,

The insert screen will be housed in a sub frame,
Comes with screws to hold on to the screen and the framebacking .
remove these screws and the unit will pop forward,
Unplug the lead for the LCD from the back of the insert screen.
Unplug the Inverter from the back of the screen too.

We have the replacement ready to go now....
Take replacement screen and connect to plug from back of screen,
Connect the inverter also.
Fix power and test,

If this starrts up straight away then the screen is working,
let your machine start up and run till you are happy,
Everything ok now, shut down and screw everything back together.

Test again,This should be the best FIXYA
Please rate me thanks ......

I have an ibm t43 and the top of the screen is glitching to where it has white lines on it. How do i fix it?

Problem may be;

1) Video Cable:

A) May have a loose connection on the motherboard side, or back of LCD screen side.

B) May be damaged.

2) Display Assembly:

Specifically the screen Inverter, or LCD screen.

Primer:
An LCD screen does not produce light.

http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/Vikuiti1/BrandProducts/secondary/optics101/

It needs an additional light source.
A Backlight is the additional light source.

A Backlight (Present technology) can be a CCFL, (Or dual CCFL's), or a series of LED lights.

The IBM T43 series of Notebook PC's uses a single CCFL.

Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp.
Similar to Fluorescent lighting used in homes, and businesses, but on a MUCH smaller scale.

(Average size of bulb is;
1) Width: 2mm. {Slightly more than 1/16th of an Inch }
2) Length: A little shorter than the LCD screen is in height.

Basic example,

http://www.ebay.com/itm/14-1-XGA-CCFL-BACKLIGHT-LAMP-IBM-THINKPAD-T42-T43-/270965162524?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f16c8421c )

The screen Inverter converts power from the laptop for the LCD screen, and Backlight.

90 PERCENT OF THE TIME the fault is the screen Inverter.

Primer over.

Example of Inverter,

http://www.batterycentury.com/lenovo-ibm-thinkpad-t43-inverter-p-186266.html

The thin plastic 'frame' in front of your LCD screen, is the LCD Bezel.

(Goes by several names, depends on manufacturer.
Display Bezel, Display Panel Bezel, LCD Bezel, LCD Front Bezel, etc.)

Behind it, and located at the bottom of the LCD screen, is the Inverter.

IBM ThinkPad T43 series of Notebook PC > Service Manual (Free),

http://www.tim.id.au/blog/tims-laptop-service-manuals/#toc-ibmlenovo

Go down to the line that begins with ThinkPad T20. (T20 in blue)
Scroll across, click on - T43

[ This is a PDF file. The computer you are using now has Adobe Reader on it, which uses PDF files.

After you click on the file name { T43 } it may take up to 30 seconds, before the first page comes up ]

A) ALL power removed. Remove the AC adapter (Charger) and Battery.

B) It would be BEST, if you would wear an ESD wrist strap. Have it's alligator clip connected to a good ground source.
(Electro Static Discharge)

Average price of an ESD wrist strap is $3 to $6.
One example,

http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103245

C) Use a multi-compartment container for the various screws you will remove.
Label each compartment for the area the screw/s come out of.

SOME screws look VERY similar to other screws. Do NOT mix them up.

1) Check the connection of the Video Cable TO the motherboard, and TO the back of the LCD screen.

NOTE*
The connection MAY look to be plugged in tightly, but in reality it is not.
Physically make sure the cable is plugged in tightly.
(Especially at back of LCD screen )

You have to remove the Display Assembly from the laptop, in order to properly access the video cable connection, at the back of the LCD screen,

NOTE*
PDF file page number, and service manual actual page number, Do Not match. When I refer to a page, the reference will be to the PDF file page number.

Go to Page 121 in the Service Manual, for units that have a 14.1 Inch LCD screen.
Page 126 for 15 Inch.

Motherboard Connection:
Laptop open, looking at the LCD screen; The cables on the Left are Video. The cables on the right are for the Wireless Antenna.

LCD screen connection:
Disassembly of LCD Assembly starts on Page 154.
Page 167 shows the video cable, and connection.
LCD flat panel cable = FPC. Also known as Video Cable.

On Page 121 you will see a component removal list, listed in order of removal.
You can click on an underlined subject, to go directly to the chapter that deals with it

To remove the LCD Assembly, (Display Assembly), you have to
remove the Keyboard, then Keyboard Bezel. (Palm Rest)

Once the Keyboard Bezel is removed you have direct access to the motherboard connection side, of the LCD cable. (Video Cable, or for IBM - FPC)

Check the connection. Tight or loose, you still have to check the connection at the back of the LCD screen. (LCD Panel)

1a) Check for damage to the LCD cable.
If there is obvious damage to the outside sheath of the cable, there may be damage to the tiny wires inside the cable.

Even if there isn't obvious signs of damage, the tiny wires inside may be stretched/broken.

Use a multimeter set to Ohms, and check the continuity of the wires, inside the LCD cable.
{ An economical, yet good enough for this test multimeter, can be purchased for as little as $8 to $12. Available in a multitude of stores. An auto parts store is but one example. Analog or digital is fine }

2) LCD cable checks out it's on to the screen Inverter.
Make sure this small circuit board isn't damaged. (Pulled wire/s)

To test a screen Inverter requires a sensitive multimeter. Read fairly expensive,

http://www.fonerbooks.com/test.htm

Something the average consumer does not have.
For this reason, the ease of accessing it to replace, and the usual low cost, (Compare to an LCD screen), the unit is usually just replaced.

Parts changing I know, but you have to use what is available to you.

Or see what a computer repair shop will charge to test the unit.

[ NOTE*
An LCD screen, and a screen Inverter are a MATCHED unit!
When replacing make SURE you get the right part ]

3) Screen Inverter checks out it's a bad LCD screen.

NO, your graphics chipset is FINE.

Horizontal thick bar lines on the bottom of laptop monitor

Take it back to the retailer. Unless it is more than a year old. The graphics chip or screen has failed.

A green line just appeared on screen. how do I get rid of it.

Sad to say, you're stuck with the line. Solid color lines that go vertically or horizontally across the display are because of driver circuit failure in the display panel itself. There's a lot of electronics built into the display to control the individual pixels that make up the display. Sometimes those parts go bad and light up a whole row or column all the time. There isn't any way to get into those parts to repair them; the only way to fix the trouble is by replacing the display.

You can continue to use the laptop and just get used to the line. Using the computer this way won't hurt anything or cause further damage, but it's annoying. Or you can consider replacing the display. It's not difficult to do, and the cost for many displays is reasonable. Many sites show the process for specific brands and models of laptops, and eBay is a good place to look for replacement displays. And of course, you could use this as an excuse to replace the computer if you've been wanting a new one.

Thanks for using Fixya!

I have windows 7 laptop and a white line has appeared on screen how do i remove

There are a few reasons why that has happened. Firstly to check it is not the VGA processor plug the laptop in to an external monitor. If all is well, does the line apear whilst booting or is it a driver issue?
Hope that gives you an idea.

I have a acer 4740g laptop.I ve got display problem. It shows several lines and i cnt work on it.Recently it got little pressed on its display. Can any1 help me?

Hello shreejan_man

First thing to do is to test the screen. Also you have not mentioned if there is any cracks or damages.

Plug the laptop to an external monitor (any type will do). If the display on the external monitor is OK then it means the laptop screen is damaged.

If the display on the external screen is the same as the laptop then the problem is internal with the graphic chip or the video contacts.

this laptop is not that old since acer released this model last year. Check you warranty status on it. Some acer laptops come with two year warranty. Check the laptop carefully, if there is no sign of physical damage, (cracks, chips ...) then take it back as a warranty issue.

Good luck

Laptop LCD screen having vertical lines in blue, green and red, backlight is good and LCD panel is not cracked.

Hi,
As per your statement, I think there could be 2 reasons for this.

1. Your display drivers may be corrupted, so you need to check the display model and go to that manufacture's site and download the latest drivers and install.

2. Internally the physical device of display would be damaged, for this you need to contact your Laptop manufacturer for replace. If you have warranty then you are lucky for free replacement.

Hope this helps you to resolve the issue.

Thank you.

I have a acer aspire 5730z and i ave a problem wit my screen blinking or fully blanking up so could you please suggest me.

The display issue could be due to any of the several reasons. I would draw your attention to the most likely ones in the excpected order:
- Flickering display could be due to failing graphics processor. The reason could be overheating.
- Screen failure (including Backlight & Inverter). This can be verified by connecting the laptop to external display.

So i recommend that you immediately contact HP authorized support and seek professional assistance in order to avoid any further damage to the PC.

GoodLuck!
Dont forget to appreciate the solution if I could have been of any help!

Display issues blue lines down the screen then green color matrix keeps flashing

If the lines change or go away when you move the lid up and down, then you need a new LCD cable. If they stay the same, then you need a new LCD.

Please note: That test is NOT fool proof, but does work 99.9% of the time.
