Toshiba Libretto 100CT Motherboard

Toshiba libretto 100CT

I have a broken Toshiba libretto 100CT notebook computer. The problem is
that this computer resets after a random amount of time. Sometimes it keeps
on working for more then an hour, sometimes it runs only for a minute or so
before it restarts.
I have brought the unit to a repair shop, and they could repair the unit,
but at a cost of more then 1000 euro.  I think this is too much for such a
computer so I would like to try to repair it myself. Since I do not have any
documentation, I would like to ask if anybody has some experience with these
machines and give me some help. I do have some experience with SMD
soldering, so if I can find what's wrong with it, I think I can fix it.

Regards,
Kees.

Hello

Yes, that seems like a overheat problem. take out the power (battery and Power supply) take away the little plastic frame in front of the keyboard and move the keyboard. (do not disconnect any cables from the keyboard!) Use compressed air and blow away the dust from the cpu.

Hope you understand my bad English.

I got a Libretto 110CT an that works perfect.

Every disadvantage has its advantage :) Opening this computer is difficult
enough, so when the unit was still under warrenty, I would not try to repair
it myself.

Although I could not believe the reset switch could be the problem, I now
think that this is indeed the case. The switch is directly soldered onto the
mainboard, so it is not so easy to remove it, but when I press the switch
continuously, the reset problems are gone. (I use a small screwdriver
between reset-hole in computer and the wall.) So thanks very much for your
idea. I now will try to remove the switch, and try to find a replacement for
it.

Regards
Kees.

Sounds like either an overheating or a reset problem .

Might be as simple as an intermittent reset switch .

The other thing you could try is to wire up an external drive, and use
a copy of PC-Check to test for hardware problems . Might help with
diagnosis .

BTW, you won't believe this, but Windows (any version) has a bug
whereby if there is a corrupted sound file played by Windows after an
event (e.g. "New Mail" then it can cause a soft reset .
The solution to that is to disable all sounds . Worth a try I suppose.
(Windoes help file) .

Does this happen from a boot disk ?  If so then the computer is
definetely bad .

If you're really stuck - give me a bell..  I repair notebooks - smt rework
is quite easy - aslthough getting some of the parts can be hard..
1000euro's  -- Should be a LOT less than that..

Matt.

It does also happen when i restart the computer in dos mode, so I think that
it must be a hardware problem.

Is it under warranty ?

The other thing worth trying is to remove all the expansion cards (if
fitted) , and see if this makes any difference .

If it was my laptop. I'd try monitoring the voltage lines to see what
was happening when it reset itself - was it slowly dropping, and then
resetting when the power dropped below a critical level ?
(Tip: the +5V output is available on the PS-2 port, so no disassembly
required) .

Also try disconnecting the reset switch (if on a separate lead) . I
remember reading about a problem on some earlier machines where the
reset switch was normally closed, so any problem would result in a
reset (even just a noisy switch) .

Just my $0.02 worth ..

OTOH this does mean that you don't have to worry about voiding the
warranty by trying to fix it yourself . :)

Especially the machines at the uni I was at , some were so bad that
just tapping the desk would cause a reset . Bit of a pain if you're
doing an assignment at 2 am and the ^%^^$^% thing resets as you get up
to go and get a cup of coffee ... :-( :-(

No, it is not :(

The only expansion card that is installed is 32Mb of extra memory. I did try
to remove that, but that did not change the situation.

Ok, I'll do that. I will post the results.
Thanks for the reply

This can be a failed component on the mother board.  They would not
even attempt to troubleshoot this unit.  They will most likely be
changing the mother board.  This is the reason for the cost!

It is not praticle to service these boards, because of the labor and
cost of the instrumentation to do this type of work.
