Question about Toshiba RDXS54 DVD Recorder/HDD Recorder

1 Answer

ER7071 I've recently been having trouble with my Toshiba RDXS54 not reading any discs so I decided to attempt to clean the lens on the DVD drive (hoping it was a dirty lens & not a bad drive). After getting the lens cleaned & the device put all back together, I turn it on for the first time & on the LCD the unit gives me an error code 7071 (LCD says "ER7071"). I haven't really found a good explanation for this error code online. Nothing displays on the TV... the unit stops at this error code & I have yet to get past it. Do you know what the error is & how I can rectify it? Thanks!!!

Hello

The problem is that the lens has become stuck in the barrel. There are some DIY solutions you could try, but the probability is that you will have to get it fixed by a professional.

Use these at own risk as it may further damage the camera.

Firstly , try connecting your ac adapter or usb cable.

Try holding the shutter button while switching on the camera.

Look at the lens , and if some of the lens 'circles' is misaligned or not concentric then try wiggling it (while holding camera lens down).

Try gently pushing or pulling the lens when it extends but this is risky as it may cause the lens barrel to slip out of its guidance system.

Another way to do this is to place the camera lens down on a hard surface and then power it up. Be sure to use a soft cloth or something similar as to not scratch your lens or casing. Let the lens push the camera up and down a few times and sometimes the little resistance provided by the camera is enough to get things going again.

Try hitting your camera near the lens on the body with the soft tissue on the palm of your hand.

Other than that , I would take the camera to a repair center for a evaluation to see if it would cost more to repair than to replace the camera.

If it is still under warranty I would suggest you take it in before trying any of these steps and remove any off-brand batteries or accessories as some stores are really fussy about warranty repairs on camera's with non-brand accessories.

Hope the advise is useful. please do not hesitate to let me know if you need any further assistance.

Bad disc?

Hi,
If you have necessary tools and test instruments, know safety precaution in basic troubleshooting try the steps below to solve your problem.
I'm assuming that the symptoms (Bad disc) remain the same no matter what the disc's loaded to the unit.
1.Clean the lens. - Sometimes because of dust and any fine foreign objects the optical lens can't read any disc. If you have a DVD Lens cleaner, play it to the unit. If this is not available you may manually clean the optical lens. Open the cover and gently clean the eye of the lens by smooth, clean, soft cotton buds. Be careful while doing this, just a gentle stroke only.
2.Check the ribbon - Check the ribbon connected to the lens from the main board for scratch, damage. Once it has an open line then of course the lens can't read the disc, this is because of the movement of the optical lens back-and-forth. Also try to erase the contact by pencil eraser. If you've done the steps above and the symptoms still there then the next step requires you a little knowledge in soldering technique and reading the ohmmeter.
3.Check the spindle motor - Check the spindle motor that spin the disc with an ohmmeter. You can test it using the ohmmeter (x1) even it is connected on the lens assembly.Good motor - reading should be fairly high and it will spin. Bad motor- reading will drop to low resistance and will not spin.

Hint : Most of my repaired unit the above parts are commonly caused of the problem.
If you confirmed that you have a defective motor then replace it with a new one. Before replacing the new motor you have to check the clearance of the disc holder with the old one. The clearance should be the same as the old because if not the lens will not read the disc if it is too far or too close.
If the above steps didn't cure the problem, high chance that your optical lens was faulty.

If you can't do the job yourself, I would advice you to look for a professional to troubleshoot the symptom.

Also, check if your unit is under warranty period, avail it because the manufacturer will fix it for free. Don't attempt to open the cover(it will void the warranty).

Hope I helped you.
Have a nice day!

RCA DVD player model DRC105N that won't read discs anymore

If the DVD is not reading any CD, then it is often a lens problem.

If th lens cleaner does not work the unit must be taken apart, to clean the lens pickup with isopropyl alcohol and soft cotton tips.

In some case is necessary to replace the lens pickup, as this is defective.

"no disc" showing when disc is inserted.

The lens cleaners are nothing but litle brushes that more often than not make the situation worse. If you can get at teh lens, use a cotton swab and a little alcohol to clean it. If that does not resolve the problem, the optics are starting to fail. The message is generated after a number of attempts to read the Table Of Contents off of the disk.

Lens could have attracted enough dust to keep from reading a clean signal. First try cleaning the lens. You will have to remove the cover. Dip a Q-Tip in Rubbing Alcohol and lightly squeeze out, then rub on the lens. See if this helps.
