Do Lenovo laptops kill non-Lenovo hard drives?

Yes, I had the same ...
To put things right I downloaded Linux Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/download), burnt it to dvd and used the non-working hard drive as the only master drive, and installed Ubuntu as the operating system. Then I erased Ubuntu by installing Windows XP.

As you already have Windows working on your computer, why not create a 'virtualbox' and install the tech preview inside your current operating system? Search for for Oracle virtual box for Windows hosts (http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/virtualbox/downloads/index.html), download it and also download the guest box additions.

That just means if you have say, Windows 7 as your operating system, you create a virtualbox and install another operating system inside that virtualbox. You can run both operating systems at the same time.

If you don't fancy the idea of a virtualbox, you can use the inbuilt Windows disk partitioner to create another drive on your hard drive and install the tech preview there. Your computer will be 'dual boot' ... at start up you choose which operating system to use.

You can do the same using Linux - but be aware that Linux must go on as the SECOND operating system.

Your first port of call is to format those hard drives and put things right.

My FUJITSU SIEMENS AMILO PA 1538 screen comes black ? HELP

Try connecting the laptop to an external monitor and see if all is working Ok with that, if it is, then you may need to get the laptop display serviced - if it does the same on the external display, then try booting the laptop from a CD or DVD such as an OS install CD (Windows or Linux) or a boot utility CD such as Hiren's Boot CD - this will allow you to test whether the problem lays with your installed operating system or with the hardware. . . .
Note: do not go any further than the initial displays if using an OS install CD unless you are using a Linux Live boot CD which will not destroy your installed operating system. . . .See http://www.hirensbootcd.org/ to download a copy of Hiren's Boot CD to burn to a CD. . . .See http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download to download a copy of a Ubuntu (Linux) Live CD.

Yes I have an Acer One model AO532h that when I turn it on I get the following message..."Check cable connection! PXE-M0F: Exiting Intenl PXE ROM. No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any...

The message is generated because the southbridge is no longer in communication with the hdd - the hard disk itself is failing - the electronics board to be exact. You will have to replace it.

Ok I have a Gateway Laptop model NV73A06u and it is not powering on. The computer is no booting up correctly. I tries to start and then fails. The computer tries to fix itself for a long time and nothing...

Have you tried a Live CD?

Since you have a newer model, you can try the latest Ubuntu release located here.

Download the .iso file.

http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download

Burn the .iso file to a CD or DVD.

For burning .iso files to media, I like ImgBurn for Windows ( http://www.softpedia.com/dyn-postdownload.php?p=27810&t=4&i=1 ) and plain K3B for Linux.

Once the disk is burned, pop it in and make your machine boot from the Optical Drive (CD/DVD Drive).

Hit enter a few times once you are asked about the preferred language and to try Ubuntu without changes to your computer.

From there it should either boot up okay (maybe without sound because sound is iffy in Linux) or it will continue to be all kinds of badness.

The thing is at this point you should be able to tell if it is most likely hardware or software. If Linux boots up off of your disk, your Windows installation is hosed (not so bad, possibly cheap to fix). If you can't even boot into a Linux live environment, then the fix may involve money and a fair amount of screwdriver action.

How can i reformat my asus eee pc1000h if it doesnt have a cd drive?

You can reformat your Asus eePC 100h notebook using an Ubuntu Live USB.Here is how to make one: 1. Download an Ubuntu ISO Disk image from www.ubuntu.com or a debian ISO image file from www.debian.com. 2. You can also use an existing Live CD to create an ISO Disk image with if you have a working PC around. Many free tools exist for creating disk images.I suggest Ashampoo Burning studio or CDBurnerXP.Search for them on google. 3.Get your hands on a working PC that has Windows XP/Vista/7 installed on it. 4. Download the UnetBootIn utility from http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/unetbootin-windows-latest.exe. 5.The procedure for creating the Disk Image is as follows: (a)Requirements: 1 GB or larger USB drive, formatted as FAT32(most USB drives come formatted as FAT32 by default, but if you need to format it, on Windows, go to My Computer->right click your USB drive->format.
On Windows XP, you must be logged on as an administrator; on Windows Vista and above, you will be prompted for permissions via UAC.
On Windows, the UnetBootIN software looks like this:
brainiarc7.png
Follow the guided prompts on the software to make your Live USB drive, and be careful to select the corrrect linux distribution on the window.
When done, safely remove the flashdrive from the PC and plug it in your Asus eeePC 100h notebook.
Boot up your notebook and press the F2 Key as the system starts up and select the USB flash drive as the first boot device(You can also do the same from the BIOS setup).
When you boot up with the Ubuntu Live USB, select "Try Ubuntu without installing" option to run the Live OS on RAM.
When the system boots up completely, go to System>Administration>Gparted and the Gparted Disk utilitty will run.
From the Gparted menu, select the appropriate partition you want to format or modify.
You can read more on Gparted here.
When you are done partitioning and formating your HDD as you desire, you can also install Windows XP/Vista/7 from a FlashDrive by following the instructions below:

1.Get your hands on a working PC with Windows XP/Vista/7 installed.
2.Download the WinToFlash utility from http://wintoflash.com/download/en/
3.Install the application on the PC.
4.Once you are done, insert a Windows XP CD in the PC's optical disk drive and follow the installation instructions from WinToFlash.
By default, the installation path for Windows XP files on the drive is DRIVE LETTER:/Windows/system32.
See the screenshot below for more details:

brainiarc7_0.png

You can use the created bootable USB to install Windows XP on your notebook.
For more on WinToFlash, see this link:http://komku.blogspot.com/2009/09/wintoflash-guide-install-windows-xp.html

Have a great time ahead.

Ubuntu installation

Relax Sairam -- you don't have know all these answers.

First step, download Ubuntu and burn to a CD .

Second adjust your bios if necessary to change the boot preferences on your machine, so that it will try your CD/DVD device first before trying to boot from a hard disk.

Third, let the Ubuntu Live CD execute and bring up a desktop. On the desktop, there should be an icon to actually install Ubuntu. It will guide your through all the decisions that you need to make.

You may find it advantageous to have a "dual boot" configuration on your machine... i.e., having the choice of running some windows operating system, or ubuntu.

I have installed Ubantu in my aspire 5050. Now I want to install win XP so that I can open MS Office from Linux

do you want to make a dual-boot system? you must have installed windows OS first and leave a non-partitioned drive in your hard Disk. Then you can install Ubuntu next, instaling it to the non-partitioned drive. When the PC boots, you will be prompted to what OS to boot.

Anyway, you can Install Windows XP in any free Drive. But it is dangerous since Windows Installer might destroy your Ubuntu installation files.

My Acer Inspire one Has Linux Lite installed how do I Install Ubuntu from a USB key. I am a total Newbie to Linux

This will not be very easy if you are new to Linux. However, I will provide the instructions for preparing the live USB. I assume you are working on your Aspire with Linux Lite installed.
The same instructions apply for Windows, though will you need UNebootin for Windows. I advise you to carry out the task from a windows PC, as it will be much easier from there.

You will need:

A USB flash drive with 1GB space.

A high speed broad band connection.

Ubuntu live CD ISO file. Download it from here.

UNebootin. Download from here. (Download the version for Linux).

Note: If you already have the Ubuntu Live CD then it will save you the download. Make an ISO image of the CD and put it on the desktop.

Now you have to follow this procedure:

Run the UNebootin.

Connect your USB flash drive to your laptop. Take into account the drive letter.

UNebootin has a self explanatiory GUI. You have the choice to download the ISO from this program or to point to the ISO image you downloaded previously.

Choose your USB drive letter from the drop-down list within UNebootin.

Now it will copy the files to the flash drive.

Next you have to set the BIOS to boot from USB drives.

Insert the newly created flash drive in the port and boot from it. The Ubuntu installation should start.

Linux installation is just like that for Windows.
