Question about Zenith R50W46 50" Rear Projection Television

Won't turn on...

When the power button is pushed, it makes a "chirping" sound (like a cricket).
No picture & no sound except for the "chirping"...
What might it be?
About how much will it cost me & how much SHOULD it cost me?
Is it even WORTH saving?

Not sure but I'm working on my wd57732 and have found the color wheel motor has a cermic shaft bearing and the chirp might be coming from this. It's like glass on glass. The color wheel must be spinning at hight RPMs before the light will come on.

I have the same (I think) problem. The "chirp" sound it makes is very faint though, the sound of pushing the power button on the front almost overwhelms it. Is the power light on red? My power light is on red, and the only way to turn it off is to unplug the TV.

I have no pic or sound except a chirping noise , sounds like a cricket , LOL , timer light stays red , there was a odor , like a burnt smell

Hello. The chirping probably indicates a shorted transistor or diode, and the burnt smell usually indicates a blown capacitor or a burnt resistor, or multiple damaged parts. I would have to see the TV to be of any further assistance. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. Good luck.

Sounds like a shorted component in the power supply or the high voltage circuit.

Philips mod. # 60PP920217F

Hello bradahman,

The chirping sound is either a shorted Horizontal Output Transistor / Power FET (whichever one is used in this case) or the IHVT (Flyback Transformer) has developed a short in its windings. In ether case both components will have to be replaced. I would suggest you have a qualified TV technician come over and troubleshoot the problem and give you an estimate on the repair.

I hope this helps,

Thank you,

The chirping is an indication that the power supply is having difficulty starting up. This could be a problem with the power supply itself or a problem further down that is loading the supply. For a set this size, I'd invest in a detailed repair estimate. Report the results here and we can walk you through the actual repair.
