I just bought this copier and so i do not know the sound it makes, but when you push the copy button the platen will only go so far and then it stops and starts making a loud clicking noise like the wheel is trying to turn , but can't . we had it apart and did not see anything broken. and it displays L3.

How long ago did you buy it? Did you buy it locally or online?

Do you mean the platen drive gear? It is the little gear that while the platen is supposed to move runs along a grooved row. If the gear is stripped, while the the platen motor is running the the stripped gear will just spin and the platen will not move along the track as it's supposed to. You said you had that thing apart. Did the gear (or stripped wheel) seem to be tight in place and properly aligned along the track? If you had a loose or cracked bushing it might cause the platen gear to not be properly aligned or "tightly" aligned with the track. If the gear had any play in it this could explain why it eventually became stripped. Most people know what there printers sound like while the platen is moving back and forth. Did you ever notice a strange noise, however slight, or your machine gradually taking a little longer to make copies? Also check the grooves on the track the platen gear turns on to see if any teeth look damaged. Let me know what you find. You may get away with just replacing the gear which is about $10. Wait to hear from you. Thanks.

Sounds like you've lost a tooth from a gear in the scan drive, most of them are plastic, it will only need one tooth to break to make a clicking noise. If you can see which gears rotate as the scan moves, examine them very carefully. Can you gently move the scan by hand?.Do you feel any resistance at the point where the noise starts? If so , check for obstructions, like position sensors bent/damaged

Error code L8 on XEROX model 5305

That indicates the main board has not sensed the exposure lamps coming on. Those are solder in lamps, I believe there are 6 or 7 on the array.

I found it in basement

the 5305 was a portable copier and the paper tray attached to the platen cover (glass cover). It may be there. The device will not work without a paper tray. If it's been in the basement, you may need to make sure there are cartridges in it too before attempting to power it on. If there is not a toner cartridge, the device will not power on.

I keep getting a display message of L and a 3

Hi renee - L3 error code indicates a platen problem. The platen did not move within 15 seconds after the main motor turned on.
Check if any items are blocking the movement of the platen. The platten is the glass that moves across the top of the copier when copies are made. It must have free movement.
1) Remove the obstacle if there is a blockage.
2) If there's no blockage ,power the copier off for 30 seconds, power back on and try another copy.
If this fixes your problem PLEASE rate this as fixed. Let me know what happens. If you need more help just add a comment and I'll be happy to assist you further. Thanks.

Xerox 5305 copier excess toner

sounds like faulty drum cleaning blade, which is usually contained in the replacement drum module.I would be inclined to take the drum unit back where you got it (unless you replaced it with a second-hand one) 99% certain the problem is contained in that module

Streaks on copied paper

You have a failed drum cleaning blade that lives in the drum cartridge. The blade is replaceable as a seperate item.
