Question about Carrier Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

My air condition unit coil is leaking. The unit is only 3 years old. My builder is Standard Pacific and the intallation company is Chaz Roberts. The coil is warrantied but Chaz Roberts wants over $700 to install. Every house on the block I live on has had this problem. Obviously there is a faulty part and I should not be responsible for payment to have the part replaced. Who do I deal with on this. Cindy Matson Gilbert AZ.

Sure it's the coil, and not a faulty soldering job? The feed and return lines are copper, and are soldered in place. A bad job will cause leaks. Since so many houses have the same problems, it is the installer, not the coil!

Brand New 2 weeks old 4 ton Trane compressor leaks a lot of water onto pad

If the unit is running in cold weather than there is ice building up on the coils located outside. This is normal in that the unit is running in heat pump mode heating inside and cooling outside, After the unit detects the ice build up it briefly reverses the cycle heating the outside coils melting(defrosting) the ice which you observe as water on the pad.

The video gives you an example of the defrost cycle!

We have a goodman air conditioning unit it just doesn't seem to get cool. It is only 3 years old. We changed the filter and reset the thermostat. What could be the problem. It sounds like the...

I am assuming from your problem description that the unit is cooling some but not as good as normal. If that is the case then the system has lost some of its refrigerant charge.
Recharging the system will correct the problem but only temporarily.
The system has a refrigerant leak that must be found and corrected for a complete repair.
Be sure to get a reputible( ask other people for a reference based on integrity and skill) heating and air contractor/technician. I would suggest staying away from big companies as their technicians are poorly trained.

If they say you have a refrigerant leak , have them show you exactly where it is and have them squirt bubble solution on the leak so you can see it.

If your system is only 3 years old then any major parts are under warranty. This does not cover labor.

Hope this helps.

Air conditioning unit just stopped working , operation light blinking code 1, on a cmh3172, the ac guy sai blown pcb board, are they repairable or actually have to be replaced, he said everything else...

It is a common problem, usually associated with moisture physically on the board or improperly installed communication cable (18-22 AWG shielded stranded Cu cable required). The PCBs are tightly packed and are frankly not worth the time it takes to diagnose and repair them. Replace the PCB and make certain that the original install was done correctly with the correct materials.

I am a service manager of a richmond va hvac firm and we tell are employess that if a unit is over 15 yrs old and needs over 500 dollors worth of repair to recomennd replacement the reason the leak repair is so much is because the unit has to have all the refrigerant pulled out and a torch is needed to weld the piping back together in some cases if the leak is in the coil heating it can cause other leaks you also have to add driers to the system and then the environmental fees and rules that the epa makes us follow make prices even worse if you do fix it you probally wont even get a warranty on the repair. I would replace the system and also if cost of repairs are a concern ask the company about a 10 yr part and labor warranty

Evcon AC (heat pump) leak in indoor coil

Most refrigerant leaks can be repaired. However, if the leak is between the aluminium fin plates, I would have to agree that it should be replaced. They are correct that you cannot after fifteen years find either an indoor or an outdoor unit seperately and the whole unit would need replacing.

Short cycling air conditioner

depending onthe age of the unit it would be wise to have someone use a refrigerant leak detector to find the source of the problem. if it is over 15 years old i would probalby think about replacing the unit with a new 410A refrigerant unit due to the R-22 refrigerant getting phased out of production(the price is really going up) it sounds like the company you have might not know what they are doing i would look in the phone book and call another company and ask about doing a whole sytem leak search it might cost about $500 bucks to find the actual leak and repair it (have the guy physically show you where it is with his meter) but its a lot cheaper than adding refrigerant every year

When turning on central air, our main electrical breaker is tripping. This is a brand new home barely over 1 year old. Should the AC have a warranty not covered by a builders contract??

Builders give a one year warranty but your air conditioner has five years on all parts. Anything outside the unit is not covered under the ac warranty. Breakers, stopped up drain and dirty coils.

Fidgerdare electrtolux air conditioner

have you brought it down for a general cleaning on the 3 year period? if not then that's what it needs now.

the coil is freezing up because of dirt accumulation on the coil. even there is a filter, still with in 3 years it could have accumulated to decrease the airflow thru the coil and freeze it up.

Air conditioning unit

On a "Non Heat Pump" unit, icing of the pipes is not good. It is an indication that you either have a low freon level (Charge), low load, wrong superheat.
A low load usually means, in this case, something wrong with the air flow. Clogged filter, wrong fan speed, something blocking the return air grill, like a chair/ blanket, etc.
If low on charge, the evap (Indoor Coil) will ice up and the ice will then slowly creep along the pipe untill it gets to the outdoor unit. This is really no good. Air cannot go thru solid ice so naturally there is no cooling happening.
If a company replaces the outdoor unit (Condensing Unit), there is no warranty on the indoor unit. I do not know of any company that will repair an indoor coil (Evap). Just not smart money. They have to capture the freon, open the system, make the repair, ensure the correct level of freon is in the system, and most time, add a filter/ dryer for additional filtering and drying of the freon. With all that, no one is going to patch a leak on an old coil because if it leaks now, it's going to have another soon. You'll just be chasing leaks and spend money after money. Hope that makes sense. HVAC companys have to follow the EPA rules too. Leaving a system leaking above a certain percent of it's total charge is a major no-no. They will not do it.
Hope this helps clear up a few things and good luck.

Warranty and repair

call the company that installed the unit first. if they wont pony up any reputable hvac service company can honor the warranty. the manufacturer will give him a free compressor and you will have to pay him labor to install it.
