I understand the whole parent thing, it was my mother I was always concerned with. Touching the memory chips won't effect them at all. They are located under a panel on the bottom of the machine. Here's a link for replacing the memory. The diagram isn't the best, but it will give you an idea. Don't forget to give me a good rating. Thanks and good luck!!!

the solution is very simple!!!!!! it might help u out(99% chances): wat must be happening is, while typing u r touching the touchpad by mistake which is making the cursor move back.... This time type & ensure that u r not touching the touchpad & u will notice that the problem wont reoccur....or u can also turn off the touchpad while typing so that even if u touch the touchpad by mistake, it wont make the cursor change its location..... try this & let me know if it resolves ur ongoing issue by rating this solution...

It wont turn on whether its plugged in or not....

This issue could be due to presence of static charges or internal hardware malfunction of the notebook. To isolate the exact cause of the issue, perform the following steps.

Step 1: Hard Reset

To perform a hard reset, please follow the steps listed below:

1. Unplug the AC adapter from the notebook PC and remove from any port replicator or docking station.
2. Remove the battery from the notebook battery compartment.
3. Press and hold down the power button for about 20 seconds.
4. Insert the battery and plug the AC adapter back into the notebook PC.
5. Press the power button to turn the notebook PC back on.

This will discharge the static charges from the notebook. Now check for the issue. If the issue persists, then remove and reseat the memory modules of the notebook.

Step 2: Remove and reseat memory modules

You can refer the service manual provided below for information to remove and reseat the memory modules.

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00444244.pdf

Refer page no: 121, 122 & 123
NOTE: PDF manuals require the Adobe Acrobat Reader for viewing and printing.
However, if the issue still persists, then it is clear that the issue is due to internal hardware malfunction of the notebook and requires a detailed onsite diagnosis by a service technician. At this point, I would recommend you to take the notebook to a nearest Computer Service Center to get it repaired/serviced. I hope the information provided would be helpful.

Its very slow and somtimes the pages freez is a hp pavilion dv 4000

Hello,
it is difficult to say without knowing the exact model name, os and service pack and the amount of memory and free space on your c:\.
You can check how the memory is used and which process/applicaction is using the most of it
Right mouse click on the taskbar and select taskmanager.
On the first tab you see the running application, second tab the processes, on the third tab you can check the memory.
If you have more applications running close one of them down and check if the performance is improving.

You can also look at the HP support page
goto http://www.hp.com/cgi-bin/hpsupport/index.pl
select country (select US you can the follow the steps below
exactly as given to reach the resolution)
select See support and troubleshooting information
enter your product name (HP pavillon ...) and click on >>
from the resulting list select your product
then select How to use

I hope this helps in finding the solution for your performance problems.

Hp wont turn on

Kindly check the battery and power supply as first step
Second step would be to check that ram are intactly fit in there memory module as this one of the major reason b coz of which it might be happening
As it is risky to cut open lappy as it requires professional supervision so if you rate yourself good in undrstanding electronic behaviour on board you may operate it further as i am from aplication background and if the problem persists contact the service station

Thanks and Regards

Hp help

Additionally, if the Notebook still doesnot respond when tried to start, I recommend you to check if the Notebook is eligible for the free repair program offered by HP if the Notebook is purchased and currently available in US or Canada.

You can get the list of Notebooks wich are covered under this free repair program from the link below :

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&docname=c01300427

You need to find the Product Number of the Notebook which will be available printed at the bottom of the Notebook indicated with P/N and try finding the same among the list available in the link above.

If your Notebook product Number is listed in the above link, contact HP Chat Support and get the Notebook fixed through mail in repair offered by HP.

You can find additional information about this free repair offered by HP from the link below :
