Canon i960 Streaking

When I print my business cards using my i960 I'm getting faint black streaks through the middle of most cards. I'm using Avery 8871 Two-Side Printable White Matte Inkjet stock (which is fairly thick). The streaking is not excessive but enough to ruin the card. It does this on about half the ten cards per page. I like the machine but this is very annoying to say nothing of expensive in the consumables department. Is there an easy/inexpensive fix or am I better off getting a new machine?

There is a setting in the print dialog that will put more space between the print head and your print media, but, like Epson, Canon has chosen to bury this setting in the maintenance tab of the printer properties menu.

To get there (in xp), you need to click start, printers (and faxes, I believe), look for the icon for your i960 printer, right click, then click properties. Across the top of the resulting dialog box are tabs. I don't have XP running so have to do this from memory, but there are tabs for page setup, print settings, etc. I believe the right most tab is for maintenance. Under maintenance, I believe there is a choice for options or custom options . . . something like that. Click there and look for a choice that offers to prevent paper abrasion. Click to put a dot in the selection button, click ok (or apply, whatever) and then back out of that dialog box.

If you have selected this option correctly, a dialog will pop up when you go to print advising you of this selection (apparently, to let you know that the print head will be pulled away from the media slightly . . . could result in slightly diffused resolution if you were printing on media of normal thickness, I suppose).

I actually discovered this feature because I went looking for it on my Epson RX595 while printing wedding invitations for my son's wedding. The invitation featured an embossed square on the front cover that was coming into contact with the RX595 print head causing ink smudges at various points on the invitation. I found an explanation as to how to locate this setting for the Epson printer, and, low and behold, found that the similar setting, though named differently ('avoid abrasion' or something equally obscure) was located in the same area of the Canon print dialog (Maintenance tab . . . go figure).

It definitely worked on both printers for me. In previous older printers, there used to be a lever on the print head carriage that could be adjusted to manually move the print head away from the print media - this 'soft' way to accomplish that simple task is progress, I guess.

Otherwise, I have to say that the i960 continues to be my absolute favorite printer of all time.

It's possible there is a problem with the way the print driver interacts with the application from which you are printing. Try printing to a file, such as PDF or MS format, and then printing from a different application, such as Adobe Reader or MS Word.
Also, please check with Canon to see if this isn't a "known issue". They may already have issued an update to the driver software to resolve it.

Hi, My Canon 3245 Imagerunner is streaking.

Hello,
First, the streaks appears when copy from glass or adf, when printing or all?

Solution #1:
How many copies did you do from last drum changing? if over 80 000 copies, replace the drum unit.
-in case that streaks appears when copy and print

Solution #2:
If the streaks appears only if you copy from adf or glass, clean the glass and dry it out. Both glasses, narrow on left side beneath the adf/cover and glass for copy of original.

Solution #3:
If the streaks are wide and solid, with possible toner left overs, you need to replace fixing film.

Hope that helps!

WHAT IS FUSER

A "Fuser" is a component used in laser printers to "fuse" the toner to the paper, which then gets displayed as text, a picture, etc.

If the fuser has a problem, the printing may be faint, not print at all, or if dirty, can cause streaking on the paper.

Black smudges on printed page

Are you sure this is a Designjet 450 (large format printer) and not a Deskjet 450 (portable printer)? The following assumes you have wispy black streaking on the printed side of the paper. If the streaking is on the back side then post more details of the printer model and the issue.

In either case the most likely cause is a buildup of fibers on the underside of the printheads or carriage, causing wisps of black ink to be dragged on the paper when the carriage reverses direction. You can clean the printer as shown at the following (though the details will be somewhat different for the Designjet or Deskjet....).

Consistent, faded and streaking vertical lines across entire page, from top to bottom.

Toner issue getting to drum - use gen toner cart.

or Drum blade stuffed (lines are down page fro top to bottom- replace drum assy

Drum has been exposed to light faint or blank across copies repeated 4 times down page - replace drum assy

or upper fuser roller stuffed, down page, smudgy print -  replace fuser

LSU(laser) or boards rarely cause issues

My Canon i960 printer is printing red streaks on the pages

It's possible that the heads need to be replaced. That's one disadvantage to the printers that don't have the heads contained within the cartridge.
