Firstly you need to identify the contacts on the socket.
Find a spare stereo jack lead and plug it into the socket.
Then use a test meter (if you don't have one a torch bulb and battery will do to test continuity). Attach one of the meter probe/wires to each of the contacts (tip, ring and sleeve) on the jack plug at the other end of the cable in turn whilst touching the contacts on the plug socket with the other probe. Make a note of the results.
The sleeve contact should be the ground (earth) usually a black wire.
The other two contacts (ring and tip) are your +ve left and right. It doesn't really matter which way round but stereo left is normally the tip and right the ring.
