Normally, the retaining ring on the head of the stethoscope screws on and off, so the diaphragm can be cleaned or replaced, as necessary. Have you tried that?

Can a valve tap in a 2004 Town Car be the tension on the timming chain?

B Mckenna, Timing chains can make noise, when you say the noise does go away sometimes, it sound more likely to be a valve lifter or tappet noise. You can pick up a mechanics stethoscope cheap and listen to the noise and hear/see if it is louder from the timing chain area or the valve covers to determine location.

I have aticking sound on the driving side of a 1997 lincoln towncar

Although you did not mention the mileage of the car, here are some ideas.
Is the motor oil clean, and has it been changed regularly? (We are hoping it is not sludged up and dirty.)
Dirty oil can cause clogging of oil lines and hence ticking sounds.
If it is clean and has been regularly changed, try a mechanic's stethoscope to find the source of the sound.
Such stethoscope is a really long screwdriver. ( 18 to 24 inches).
You put the handle end to your ear and the tip on the valve covers to try to determine where the ticking is coming from.
First and easiest attempt would be to add an engine oil additive to stop the sound.
You could use a thin additive like "Rislone" or "Lucas", or a thick additive like "STP".
I have used these, and they worked for me.
I they do not help in a week or so, you may need to remove the valve cover and try to pin-point the problem.
God bless your efforts.

2009. Why is it tapping when warmed up?

Bad lifter?
If you can isolate the source of the noise (stethescope or wooden dowell) it's usually easier to identify the problem.

Have a chatter in engine not rods or maines

hot or cold engine or both, is not stated and very very important.
1.6L is a G16B 16valve engine.
  1. find a a mech that can do this.
  2. did you drop all belts first? run cold cold for 2 min, gone now?
  3. use stethoscope to the front timing belt cover, is this it?
  4. forget the 60k mile new timing belt , BINGO.?
  5. Forget the 60k valve last check and the stethoscope shows, noise on top valve cover. harbor freight sells it for $5
  6. is oil pressure at spec, using a real gauge?
  7. is the front crank pulley bolt (17mm head) at 94/100 ft/lbs,. BINGO?
  8. is the exhaust collector donut gasket bad? (common) sounds just like bad rods too. so while making noise , use a lever and bend the header pipe,(below collector at CAT, lever it, does noise stop.?? BINGO !
  9. is the intake pipe on top of engine, not with huge bolts hold it to the exh top rear header tight, many are loose. fix that now.
  10. once you prove all this is good, then bad engine.? by process of elimiation. works.

Help!!! my litmann 4000 wont turn on even with new batteries!!:(:( any ideas usually after fiddling with it then it work but not this time and i need it!

Hi,the problem is obviously from the internal battery contact of your device,or a the cord that delivers power to the unit is broken, you can take apart the stethoscope and fix it,but as a warning, the litmann 4000 is a very fragile and sensitive electronic stethoscope that requires high technique and expertise to fix,so i will suggest you contact a qualified stethoscope technician,so you don't end up ruining your stethoscope.

Thanks and take care

1989 Lebaron with a tapping noise.

I would replace the injector and see how that goes. It could be going bad or malfunctioning. You run the chance of it going bad and causing serious engine problems.
