  1. Click on the "Start" icon in the lower left corner of the screen. Select "Control Panel." Next select "Mouse" under "Hardware and Sound."
  2. Select the "Device Settings" tab from the dialog box now. You can see the touchpad for your Vista machine highlighted on this screen. Select "Settings."
  3. Read the information provided in the next dialog box. It gives you options for tapping your touchpad, using the buttons, scrolling, pointer motion and sensitivity.
  4. Make any changes you want from the various topics. When you make a change, click "Apply." Click "OK" when you finish making all your changes.

Try connecting an external mouse via USB port. If that works you probably need to have the palm rest (top plastic piece that contains the touch-pad and buttons) replaced.

Replace the mouse with a known good working one.
If you are not using a mouse (bad news) the touch pad may be failing.
In that case, an easy test and fix is to disable it in "Control Panel" then install a mouse in the USB Port.

If the problem is corrected then it is your touch pad.

Here is a link to the manual from Dell. FREE!

See Page 42 on disabling the Touch Pad.

Go to EBay and insert "6000 Dell Inspiron touch pad". It's cheap but difficult to replace.

If you've reinstalled the drivers for the touchpad, the issue is likely the hardware- if in warranty, contact Dell tech support- if not, you may need to purchase the palmrest assembly and consult support.dell.com for the install instructions

My laptop touchpad is not working dell inspiron n5010

you will have to reinstall the drivers and the sofware in your Dell. I think since the touch pad is not working if you use the cursor keys and proceed to the control panel and try to restore the laptop, then if this will reset to an earlier date, then it will solve the issue.
try this out and check to reinstall drivers. hope this helps. Good day

Dell inspiron I6400 touch pad is not working

Unless there is not a hardware switch and the only manufacturer that I know of that did that was Compaq/HP about 5 or so years ago. Typically there are no drivers to be installed for a mouse (touch pad) as a generic set is in the driver library of the operating system. 9 times out of 10 it is a hardware failure. With that being said, if it has warranty send it in, if it does not, (although it may just be a loose connection or the touch pad itself) most repair shops are going to run anywhere from 150 - 300 dollars just to crack it open. Best option is to get a small USB mouse, unless you just really want the touch pad.
