Re: I can't open a port to the internet from my Router
Yeah, it's pretty simple actually, if you have verizon. Connect to your modem using this IP: http://192.168.1.1 Then use the username "admin" and password "password1". It may look like it's repeating each letter you're typing so that the password looks much long, but that's just the router being weird. Finally, go to "Firewall settings" then click yes, click port forwarding on the left, then "add". Select your computer from the drop down. Then select TCP as the protocol and "any" for source ports then whatever port you want forwarded for destination ports (you can do a range of ports if you want). Lastly, hit "Apply" and after a quick refresh, your port should be forwarded. DONE!

Please connect the Netgear Router to your Laptop with a Ethernet cable.
In order to connect Netgear Router to your Laptop please follow these steps:
STEP 1 :
If you look at back of router there are 4 LAN ports that are together and 1 WAN or Internet port which is alone. Connect the Internet cable ( provided by your Internet Service Provider) to WAN or Internet port of router .
Now take another Ethernet cable and connect one end of the cable to any one of 4 LAN ports and connect the second end to your laptop. Now please turn on the router.
You can see Power, Internet, Wireless and one LAN port light there on the router.
Now come to computer and try to open the router login page.
In order to open the router page , you need to open your Internet Explorer and type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar.Now it will ask for router login information .
Username = admin
Password = password
If it doesn't work please try to check the IP address of your computer ( In order to check the IP address of computer, Click on START menu , goto RUN and in RUN Window please type cmd. A black window pops up under this please type IPCONFIG and check the ETHERNET adapter IP address.
Now try to open the router page using this IP address.
STEP 3: Now on the router page you can see number of option on the left side.
In order to change or secure the router for wireless connection please click on WIRELESS SETTING option under BASIC SETTING.
Under the SSID : type the name for your wireless network ( of your choice)
CHANNEL : it should be 11 or 6 .
Security : select WPA-PSK and under key please type any password of your choice
( it must be 8 characters atleast)
Please save the setting.
Now unplug the Ethernet cable from your laptop. Under the wireless networks , you can find your wireless network name . Just select it and click connect on. It will ask for security key or network key please type the same password that you have created for wireless setting.
Now it will connect you to your wireless network that is secured now.
Connect the MODEM (device you received from your Internet Serivce Provider that gets the Internet signal) to the router via the WAN port. WAN stands for Wide Area Network and this gets you out to the Modem and then to the Internet.
Ports 1 and higher are for computers and network printers that you can directly connect to your LAN - Local Area Network.
To secure your connection, you will need to configure your router and you will need to connect your laptop to the router (either wireless or via one of the numbered ports on the back of the router), open a web browser and enter the IP address of the router.
Since you did not put the model of the router, I cannot give you specifics on how to secure the connection. You can go to the D-Link web site, find your router, download the manual and it will walk you thru the settings.
Basically, you will be entering a WEP key (a set of letters and numbers that you know) to allow only wireless computers that have this key.
open internet explorer or firefox whichever you use. type in 192.168.1.1 or if that doesnt work 192.168.2.1 and iw will promt you wit a login screen most likely it well be admin admin as pw and login if not try admin *** the pw and leave te rest blank or try admin username password as the password or if u still cante figure it out let me know
Put the setup disk in your computer and it will step you through the process.
Typically, you will have to hook your computer directly to an internet connection (with ethernet cable), then unhook it and connect the internet cable to the router (usually in port 1), then connect an ethernet cable from the router to your computer and plug in the router.
The disk should download the appropriate software and walk you through setting up a password and stuff.
After all that, you can unhook your computer and use it wirelessly.
Step 1. Before you open ports in your router, set the computer (or the device) which requires
ports to be opened for, with a static IP address. You can choose any IP address from the
range of addresses you are using on your local network, as soon as it is not used by any other
device. The default range is from 10.1.1.2 to 10.1.1.254. In our example we are using
Windows XP: Control Panel > Network Connections > Local Area Connection > Properties >
Internet protocol TCP/IP > Properties
Windows Vista: Control Panel > Network and Internet > [Network and Sharing Centre] > View
Network Status and Tasks > View Status > Properties > Internet Protocol v4 > Properties
Select the “Use the following IP address” option:
IP address: 10.1.1.99
Subnet mask: 255.0.0.0
Default Gateway: 10.1.1.1 (your router’s address)
DNS: 10.1.1.1 and 184.108.40.206 (or whichever your provider is using)
Now open the necessary ports in your router and redirect the traffic to the 10.1.1.99 address.
Here are the steps:

Step 2. Open your web browser and enter the IP address of the router (http://10.1.1.1). Enter
user name and password (default username “admin” and password is “admin”).
Step 3. Click on Advanced at the top and then click on LAN Clients.

Step 4. You will need to add a LAN Client (the address of your computer or a device) into the
router before you can open any ports. Type in the IP address of the Computer/Device (the
one you assigned in Step 1). You can specify the name of this workstation under Host Name
(optional). Click Add and then Apply.
Step 5. Go to Advanced > Virtual Server (Port Forwarding). There is a list of pre-set ports in
the router which you can choose from.

Step 5a. If your specific application is not listed there, you can add the necessary ports
yourself. Select the “User” Category and click on Add button below.
Step 5b. Enter a name for this entry under Rule Name. Then select the necessary protocol. If
there is a range of ports to open, specify the starting port under Port Start and the ending port
under Port End. If you need to open just one port, specify this port number in all fields
including the Port Map. Click Apply.

Step 6. Go back to Advanced > Virtual Server. Under LAN IP select your LAN Client (which
you added in Step 4). Select the Category and the desired Rule or select “User” Category
and you should see the rule which you have created in Step 5b. Select it and then click on
Add > to move it into the Applied Rules section. Click Apply.
Step 7. To save the new settings into the router's memory go to Tools > System. Click on
Save and Reboot button. The router will save the settings and restart.
Are you using a DSL modem? What is the brand of your modem? The setup CD is could be detecting your modem and not the Linksys router. I believe your modem is also a router that's why the setup says that you already have a router.
To fix that, do the following steps:
-Disconnect the router from the modem -Connect your computer to port 1 on the router.
1. Open Internet Explorer and type http://192.1680.1.1 on the address bar 2. It will prompt you for username and password. By default, no username and password is admin. If the default password didn't work, try to type your own password for the router. 3. When you get to the setup page, Look for Local IP Address or Router IP Address. That is 192.168.1.1. Change that to 192.168.2.1 4. Click on Save Settings at the bottom of the page. 5. After saving, unplug the power to the router for 10 seconds then plug it back in. 6. Now connect the router back to the modem. Modem should be connected to the Internet port of the router and your PC to port 1.
Got to this link. Find your router in the list. Click on it, and then click on the prgram you want to port forward for. It will walk you thru the steps. If you can't find your program, try UltraVNC, which uses some of those ports!
