Question about System Power Supplies

1 Answer

Help!!! My son ripped out the power cord to my Acer laptop and messed up the power source inside the laptop itself. Now my computer will not charge and it will not turn on because the battery is dead. I don't know what to do at this point. Needless to say, I am so furious. The AC Adapter is fine but I need to find a way to fix my computer so I can continue my education online.

Thank you for your help. I think its just the jack. I will have one of my computer guru friends look at it and go from there. Again, thank you very much.

There's not going to be a simple fix for this. First check the jack on the computer to see if it's loose or broken. If so then the jack will need replaced. If not, then the problem will be with a power management system chip on the motherboard. Either way, the motherboard is going to have to come out in order to fix the problem. Hope for the broken jack, this is repairable and will run approx $100. If it's the power management system, then the board will have to be replaced, and that's expensive.

The solution to your problem lies in one of the following three areas:

1.) Your charger is faulty and is therefore not able to pass power to your laptops battery.

2.) The charging connector on the laptop has come loose from the contacts. Therefore a bad connection.

3.) Your battery is faulty.

I think possibility 2 is the most likely, although you will have to test possibility 3 by removing the battery and plugging in your charger and seeing if the laptop powers on.If it does power on then that rules out possibility 1 and 2 leaving a faulty battery.

I have to wiggle power cord for it to connect for the battery to charge , i ordered a new cord and it does not fit tight nor does the orginial anymore, could there be a problem with connector from the pc

The connector on the motherboard needs to be resoldered. This is a common problem that has to be fixed right away. The loose connection will arc inside the unit and eventually damage the motherboard. Unfortunatly the entire laptop has to be disassembled as the motherboard needs to be removed . The connector needs to be removed from the board and reinstalled.

Power cord isn't working for Acer 5720

I have had good success with this notebook universal power supply. Just make sure that the clip you need is included with the item. Or you could buy an OEM (original equipment manufacture) model.

Hope this helps.

Won't charge

The plug in terminal that is soldered to a board inside the laptop has a loose solder connection. This procedure require opening the laptop and some soldering iron, and some solder. If you are not confident in doing this don't try it cuz you can mess up your laptop forever.

Acer laptop won't charge.

When you finally get the charge light to come on, does the battery get fully charged? How long can it run while not plugged in?
A junker will not charge properly, or hold a charge for a short period of time. If this is the case, time to get a new battery.
If the battery seems to charge fine and the uptime is acceptable take a look at the charger and connectors, make sure their clean and free of debris. Maybe try to locate someone with the same charger and see if the problem continues (Some computer shops may have your charger)

Power cord cuts in and out

There are two places the trouble can be happening, at the adapter plug or at the power jack in the laptop. To determine which one is causing the power loss, hold the plug in the computer steady with your fingers while you wiggle the adapter cable. (If you have access to a voltmeter you can measure the voltage at the plug while you wiggle the cable to see if remains steady.)

If the charge light flickers it's the adapter cord that's bad. Because the wire flexes so much at the plug, it can break inside the insulation and cause the power loss. You either need to replace the adapter or repair it by cutting off the bad end and installing a new plug.

If the charge light remains on with the plug held steady but flickers when you wiggle the plug itself, the trouble is on the main board in the computer. The solder connections at the power jack have broken from the plug flexing and need to be repaired. This involves opening up the computer and getting at the solder side of the main board. It's tedious but relatively simple. If you are not experienced with soldering on small electronics, leave this to a professional shop.

Jack is loose where charger plugs in

This same thing is happening with my acer laptop. I sent it to the company about 3 months ago, and it happened again. I really need my laptop and cant take a month without it. I advise sending it in to be fixed to your laptop company.
Good luck (:
