Question about Apple iPod nano

Problem witj ipod

When it is off of the computer it says use itunes to restore..
When i plug it into the computer it say it is an unrecognized USB device..and it says that the product has malfunctioned and cannot be recognized by Microsoft.
I use XP and i have tried the middle button restart thing but it wont work. it just says on the ipod. OK to disconnect.

IPod Touch showing usb cable and an arrow for iTunes?


its saying that you are in recovery mode. you can try holding down the power button and the home button for 15 seconds, and if that dosnt work, or it reboots and goes back into the same usb and arrow for itunes, you will have to restore in itunes. to do that you need to plug your ipod into the computer, open itunes, select your ipod, and press restore.

Unlock a Disabled iPod
If you own an iPod Classic or iPod Nano, you can set a four-digit security code on your device and then lock it to keep other people from accessing it.
Disabling your iPod is a good way to protect the data on your device, but if you lose or forget the four-digit code, you will need to manually unlock it in order to access your music and other content.
Plug the iPod USB cable into the bottom of your iPod.
Plug the other end of the iPod USB cable into a free USB port on your Mac or PC.

Open the iTunes application by using the dock icon on a Mac or the start menu on a PC.

Click on the name of your iPod under the "Devices" list in the main iTunes window.

Click on the "Sync" button to create a connection between the computer and the iPod.
Click on the eject symbol after the syncing process is complete, and then unplug your iPod from the computer.
The lock code has been reset; when you go to disable the iPod again, you will be prompted to choose a new four-digit code.

Hard Reset a Disabled iPod Touch
A hard reset restores your iPod Touch to its original factory settings.
This is useful when your iPod Touch is disabled and won't turn on or off, but all your data is erased.
Luckily, you can restore your data with iTunes after you've performed the reset.
Once you've performed the reset, your iPod is wiped clean and iTunes prompts you to restore the settings from your last sync.

Plug the iPod into your computer and wait at least 10 minutes.
This allows the battery to recharge in case it has drained.
This could fix your disabled iPod, if the problem was caused by a dead battery.
Click "OK" if your computer opens a "Connect to iTunes" alert box.
Depending on your version of iTunes, the message may indicate the iPod is in "recovery mode" and you need to restore the device.
ITunes opens and resets your iPod for you.
Unplug the iPod from your computer if you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" alert box.
Make sure the iPod is charged before you attempt the hard reset.
Press and hold both the On/Off/Wake button and the Home button on your iPod.
Keep the buttons pressed.
Wait for the Apple logo to appear, it may take 10 seconds or longer.
When you see it, release the On/Off/Wake button but keep the Home button pressed.
Release the Home button when you see a picture of a USB cable with an arrow pointing to the iTunes logo.
Plug your iPod back into the computer.
The iTunes "recovery mode" message will appear.
Click "OK" to complete the reset.

My son updated my 2g ipod touch on his (older?) computer. It is frozen now & won't go past a screen w/the itunes symbol & the usb plug. It will not restore. I have uninstalled & reinstalled...


  • This isn't an iTunes problem. While the iPod is displaying this logo, you need to plug it in to a computer that has iTunes open beforehand.
  • Try using another computer with iTunes installed, or another USB cable for the iPod. Try to restart by holding the sleep and home buttons for about 10 seconds.
  • If this still doesn't work, take the iPod to your local Apple store, where they can check for any hardware problems that may have occurred.

Have iTunes open and your USB cable plugged into the Computer "BUT NOT THE iPOD"!

Turn the iPod off- Press and hold the sleep/wake button at the top left corner for approximately 10 seconds until the screen says slide to power off.


Force into recovery mode Press and hold the home button (in the front on the bottom) for approximately 10 seconds until you get the image of a USB cable pointing towards the iTunes logo on the screen. If you do not get this, try holding the home button down and at the same time plugging the other half of the USB cable into the ipod waiting for a message in iTunes

Follow instructions in iTunes Once you plug the iPod into the computer, you should get a message saying "iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode, it must be restored to be used." At this point you hit the restore button in iTunes and wait for the iPod to be restored

you will need to restore you ipod in iTunes.

here is the procedure for getting it seen in itune for the restore.

Plug the usb cable into the Ipod and NOT into the computer.
Hold the Home Button down for 5 second (do not release it)
Then Press and hold the Power Button for approx 10 secs (count them out)
Your iPod will reboot.
Release the power button and continue holding the Home button for an additional 27secs.
You may see the screen go blank or not.
Plug the USB end into the computer with itunes open.
Your ipod will mount in recovery mode.
Restore it and Your all set.

Update to the latest version of iTunes
To see if you have the latest version of iTunes, open iTunes and:

Restart your computer Simply restarting the computer can clear up certain issues that could prevent iPhone or iPod touch from being restored. After restarting, try restoring the device again in iTunes.

Advanced Steps
Make sure you have admin access

If your still having problems estore using a new user account Create a new user account on your computer and try to restore while logged in as the new user. iTunes will download a new version of the software restore file. After creating the new user, log in to that account and open iTunes and attempt to restore to see whether the issue persists in this new user.

Windows Vista and Windows XP
From the Start menu, choose Control Panel. Open User Accounts. Select Create a new account and follow the instructions to complete the account setup process. Once the new account is created, choose Log Off from the Start menu. Log in to the newly created user account.
When a restore issue is specific to a user, it is likely due to an unusable .ipsw file. The ".ipsw" files are what iTunes uses to restore your iPod or iPhone. If those files are unusable, then try deleting them so iTunes can download a new copy of them. Creating a new user will also cause new .ipsw restore files to be downloaded in the new user. You can find the ".ipsw" files in these locations:
Windows XP iPod touch: C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates (If you don't see the Application Data folder, you may need to show hidden files by opening (My Computer) Click on Folder Options. in that window click on the view tab, and make sure that show hidden files is selected.
Windows Vista iPod touch: C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates (If you don't see the AppData folder, you may need to show hidden files)
1. Open Folder Options by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, and then clicking Folder Options. 2. Click the View tab. 3. Under Advanced settings, click Show hidden files and folders, and then click OK.

After removing and reinstalling the latest version of iTunes, try restoring iPhone or iPod touch again in the origonal user account.




As an added note, If running Microsoft Windows XP and the issue is resolved on another computer, but you continue to experience difficulties on your original computer, you may want to update or reinstall your Windows USB drivers and then try restoring iPhone or iPod touch again.

Ipod 1st generation doesnt show up on itunes & wont restore


Do the 5 R's:

These are for Nano, but they apply to all iPods:

Reset, Retry, Restart, Reinstall, Restore
