Freezer will not defrost on its own GSL25JFPE

I have defrosted the freezer manually overnight and it seems to be working fine, but as time goes on the ice will return at the back of the freezer and on the coils. How do I go about fixing this problem so the freezer defrosts automatically as it once did? Which parts do I need to look at or replace? Thanks.

I have the same problem with the defrost heater. GE Repairman replaced the defrost heater Sept 2007 and the same thing is happening again. The repairman said the defrost heater was probably made by someone who was having a bad day....maybe the same person made the one he used to replace the bad one. It cost 165.00 for the repair in Sept 2007 and the refrigerator was purchased new at Lowe's Feb 2005. I wonder if we will have to replace the defrost heater every few months.

My GE side by refrigerator coils ice up every three or four days. I deice with a hair blower. It did deposit water on the floor, and to save my flooring I plugged the drain hole. Now ice forms below the coils, and I chip it out daily. I replaced the fan motor, and the heating element but that made no difference. The heating element had burned out. I don't know if I should replace the thermostat or the control board or what. Please advise me on this.

My GE GSS 20 DB side by side refrigerator will not automatically defrost. Heavy frost builds up on the coils in the freezer section until it will not cool properly. If I manually defost the unit, it is good for about three weeks to a month. What needs to be repaired and what is a ballpark repair cost?

Most likely, the defrost system has failed. There are three components: a defrost timer, a defrost heater, and a defrost bi-metal.
I would have suggest replace your defrost heater.

It's probably one of the GE models that are part of the recall a few years ago. Our GE side-by-side refrigerator Model GSS22WGMBBB is 6 years old and the GE service people came out and replaced the ice maker 2 times for free. The last time they came out and replaced the two front doors..for free. All of this is part of some Civil Class Action Lawsuit that we received info on back in 2005? But, now for the past 3 weeks, our refrigerator is getting frost on the coils, and the freezer gets too cold and the refrigerator part is warm. We've taken the back panel off inside the freezer and defrosted it manually two times, but no way is this going to be something we'll be doing for ever.

I read on another website that the recall was over in March 2008, but since the problem hasn't been resolved some people are going to insist GE replace their faulty refrigerator. All GE offers is a $400 off another GE appliance. No thanks! I went to Sear's last night, got a Sear's credit card and have to pay a boat load for a new refrigerator that I wouldn't have to get if GE didn't make fault products. :-(

Freezer not freezing

If freezer is icing up, you might have a defrost problem. Frost free models have a heating element that is controlled by a timer to automatically defrost ice, defrost timer turns on defrost heating element every 12 hours to melt ice in freezer and allow good air flow.
You can test defrost element with an ohm meter(located inside freezer coils-will have two wires going to a plug connection), if OK replace defrost timer (located in various places depending on make and model

Fridge hot freezer works fine

Sounds like a defrost problem. Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.
  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.

HOTPOINT FFA70 FRIDGE FREEZER

I had this problem and it was fixed relatively easily. Get everything out of your fridge freezer and switch it off overnight to allow it to defrost.

In the bottom freezer compartment there is a panel behind the draws which you can remove but you will need a special tool from a DIY shop. Its like an allen key, but with a star shaped end.

When I got the panel off I found that the filament was covered thick with ice even though it had been off for hours. No wonder it wasn't working properly. I melted this with a hairdryer. You want to take your time with this as you could easily damage the freezer if you try chipping the ice out.

Freezer works perfectly now and is very quiet.

Mate prehaps the defrost element could be burntout thus no auto defrost and the big freeze and the alarm, when you switch off the defrost starts and the alarm resets?
