Hey, sounds like you have spyware or maybe a virus on the computer, i would suggest uninstall any antivirus software you currently have on the computer, and install a 30 day trial like this one.

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/Panda-Antivirus-Titanium.shtml

or goto www.pctools.com and download spyware doctor.

should solve the problem..

All the best

Opening from a Desktop app is usually the problem... try opening directly from the browser to read the messages... as far as the desktop , there are tons of settings and updates that must be done.. it could take a lot of time and trial an error.. just make sure your using the most updated version of the software otherwise your stuck using the browser only.

We are getting dozens of pop-ups and can get rid of some of them

Popups are annoying messages or advertisements that literally "pop up" while you are on the Internet.
They use to be a huge problem, but with the releases of newer software to block them, they aren't as bad.
When a user is on the Internet, and a new window opens up without them meaning for it to, and there is an ad in the new window that popped up.
That is a popup. To get rid of popups, you're going to need some kind of popup software to stop them from appearing.

Search the Internet until you find a trustworthy Internet popup utility.
Be sure it comes from a reputable downloading source and has good reviews before you download it though.
There are scam softwares disguised as popup blockers, but these will actually add more popups.
Try the Google toolbar (there is a link in the Resources).
https://support.google.com/toolbar/answer/9230?hl=en&ref_topic=3338424
This service is made by Google and since they make a lot of internet advertisements, it makes sense that they know how to block them.
Just navigate to the install website and let it install.
The service is free and is automatic.
It will block most popups and includes a search bar linked straight to Google so you don't have to go to Google's website to search for things.
You can use that search bar.

Give the Yahoo toolbar as well (See link Below).
http://download.cnet.com/Yahoo-Toolbar-with-Anti-Spyware/3000-12512_4-10310984.html
Their toolbar is free and also has a popup blocker.
Like Google's toolbar, they offer a built in search engine in it.
Their's has a spyware searcher as well though. It can scan your computer for spyware which one of the causes of popups.

Download and try Smart Popup Blocker if you aren't satisfied with other services.
http://download.cnet.com/Smart-Popup-Blocker/3000-7786_4-10282837.html?tag=mncol
This doesn't add a toolbar to your web browser like Yahoo or Google.
Instead, it is software that runs in the background of your computer and blocks popups to the best of its ability.
It only works in Internet Explorer though.
You also might want to install antimalware and superantispyware

When I access my bank account, it asks me to unblock the popup function. How do I get to this option

You can change the setting in Firefox to allow popups to appear for all sites or just certain sites.

Check out the following information on the Firefox website: http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/pop-blocker-settings-exceptions-troubleshooting

Hope that helps!

How do I turn OFFG pop up blocker?

If this is an AOL supplied pop up blocker try the steps below.

Try looking at the top of your aol browser for something like tools or settings. Search inside them for the popup blocker. You can also just type popup blocker in aol's help to find out how to turn it off.

If this is an Internet Explorer pop up blocker, try the steps below:

Turn off the pop up blocker in the Internet Options in the control panel. Click Start/Control Panel/Internet Options or Start/Control Panel/Network and Sharing. Look for Internet Options. If you have the menu bar at the top of your browser just click Tools/Internet Options. When Internet Options opens click the Privacy tab and look down towards the bottom and remove the check mark from Turn On Popup Blocker the click Apply/OK.

If you have google toolbar at the top of your browser it has a pop up blocker also. So you can turn it off by clicking where it says Blocked, then it will allow popups from that website.

Internet explorer cannot display web page. this always pops up on my computer when trying to access facebook. how can i fix this?

To remove pop ups try following steps: Before removing it I am giving some introduction about popup. Pop advertisements are an intrusive method where when you click on it it opens up in a seperate window. To remove:
  • Click on start button.
  • Select internet explorer.
  • Open the tools menu located on the upper level in menu bar.
  • Select popup blocker to configure the settings.
  • Select turn on to turn on it and select turn off to turn off it.

Could be viral infection since you mention there is tons of popup meaning this is from the internet browser right? If not, it could be a failed hardware. Maybe doing a full system recovery using the acer recover disk and reinstalling your computer to factory setting may help.
