SO I have a dinosaur mp3 player and am trying to use it again. First I had to order the damn usb cable since memorex only will work. Now I plug the bastard in and nothing comes up on the comp screen at all, regardless of the 4 ports chosen. I don't remember having to use the software start up disc before when I first used it, but maybe I do. Problem is, I don't have it any more. What the hell should I do?
Can't find anywhere to get another copy of that either.

disconnect the mp3 from the computer. take it to the nearest refuse recepticle. install the device in the recepticle. drive, walk, or ride the bus to the nearest WAL-MART. buy new mp3 player w/ operator manual. read.
this player is a piece of work ill tell ya i had to disassemble the damn thing resolder a piece back into it then it still dont work properly ill just tell u to get a new one or go with the ipod most pawn shops have them for really cheap these days
What you can try is to remove the software off your computer not the firmware the software that came with the mp3 player if you remove this then when you plug your mp3 player in it should give you message new device found then you could try installing the software again then it might be able to let you use the firmware update. As you have tried the lead and also your usb port then you know that they are working fine. Just try removing the software that came with the mp3 player then give it another try this way when you plug the mp3 player in the computer wont know what it is and tell you new device found. If it dont say this then you know the mp3 player is to fault and not any of the software on your computer give this a try then get back to me ok.
Once software is removed when you plug it back in it will say new device found and it will come up under my computer as mass storage device if this happens then put the mp3 player into recovery mode then try running the firmware. Let me know what happens ok
