Double check the lens is connected properly.

Remove the battery and try again.

Have you been using the mirror lockup prior to this error ?

I already double-checked the lens connection and is ok. Did the battery removal several times but to no avail. I cannot determine if I used the mirror lock-up prior to the error. I cannot even open the mirror lock-up menu to determine if it was on or off. A message opens and tell me that mirror-lock up option is not available with the current settings. I already reset the settings to default but, again, to no avail.

This ERR message "press shutter release button and try again" does not work and the manual says to contact the nikon-authorized service rep. I did that once before, about a year ago when the same error message came up. The service rep said that that is common with the d40x models...that after about 8-10,000 photos, the camera locks up and needs to be repaired again especially if using the serial shots mode (which was the case when the first error happened, however, for the present error, I did not use the serial shot mode and in fact never used it anymore because of the previous advice).

It appears to me that this d40x is quite a lemon. If I have it repaired again, it might cost me P8,000 again at Columbia center (Quezon City, Philippines) --- that would be about US$180 again. If this would happen every 8-10,000 shots, I guess I would have to throw this camera and buy a newer model of another brand. Sigh. Now, if there is a way to fix this lemon other than squeezing it out of frustration, that would be great.

I have an error massage in my nikon d40 lcd screen "error press shutter button again" how can i get rid of it?

Press shutter button again. If the error doesn't go away, take the camera to the authorized dealer repair shop.

i have the same problem..only it seems mine has been caused by a piece of plastic off my lens somehow falling behind the shutter and impeding its use.I wouldn't recommend you poking around the shutter but you could remove the lens to have a look if the optics is damaged.Bringing it to an authorized dealer might be the best way to go !

If you can dare servicing youself You can open bottom cover of and turn a little red wheel manually. try pressing the release button now and will start working. If you have this problem re-accuring, then get it checked wih professional.

Faulty nikon d40

I had the same error message, the camera is less then a year old, however, I was taking up to 800 pictires every weekend of my kids soccer games, then a 6 month trip to the Pursian Gulf, that is when it started, I got back home, took it right in, and one year later after a few visits and calls trying to find out where my camera was, I finally got an answer back, they said I needed a new shutter which will cost $300, They said I should just by a new body for $400. What Nikon does is set that error message to pop up at about 35000 shutter releases, and you can't do a thing about it, once they hooked my camera up to thier system the said I had over 36000 shutter releases, where the average person takes 10000 a year and they want you to replace the body every 3 before buying any camera, always check out how many shutter releases you can get when you buy a camera
