How do I re-format a 2x serial SATA drive to reinstall XP?

You don't mention XP or SATA. As the windows system has crashed and I can't therefore open I can't open ''my computer'' to see the drive to use the format command. For some reason when I use the startup disk and input the SATA driver info using F6 although it seems to except it the setup procedure fails. Due to this I want to make a clean XP installation but cannot find a way of formatting the two SATA drives.

How to Format a Hard Disk

After you create the partitions, you must format the partitions:

Restart your computer with the Startup disk in the floppy disk drive.

NOTE: If you are using a Windows 95 Startup disk, a command prompt is displayed and you can skip to step 2. If you are using a Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, or Windows Me Startup disk, select the Start computer without CD-ROM support menu option when the Windows 98 Startup menu is displayed.

2. When a command prompt is displayed, type format c: /s and then press ENTER. This command transfers the system files and should only be used when you format drive C (or your "active" drive). For all other partitions, type format drive: (where drive is the letter of the partition that you want to format).

NOTE: If you receive a "Bad command" or "Bad file name" error message, you may need to extract the Format.com tool to your boot disk. To do this, type the following command at a command prompt, and then press ENTER:

Extract ebd.cab format.com

After the Format.com tool is extracted to your boot disk, type format c: /s t a command prompt to format your active partition, or type format drive: if you want to format a partition that is not your active partition.

3. When you successfully run the Format.com tool, you receive the following message:
WARNING, ALL DATA ON NON-REMOVABLE DISK DRIVE C: WILL BE LOST!
Proceed with Format?

4. Press Y, and then press ENTER to format drive C.

5. After the format procedure is finished, you receive the following message:
Volume label (11 characters, ENTER for none)?

NOTE: This is an optional feature that you can use to type a name for the drive. You can either type an 11-character name for the drive, or you can leave it blank by pressing ENTER.

Tip

What you should do before formatting the hard drive

If you are going to reinstall the OS or format the old drive, you should do the following first.
1) Back up all your important Data.

2) Download and install driver collector: http://www.drivermagician.com/download.htm save the drivers into your thumb drive for reinstallation after the hard drive is formatted, otherwise you will be doing a lot of searching for correct drivers for your PC.

3) Download and install Belarc Advisor: http://belarc.com/free_download.html
This program will show a lot of information about the hardware and software that are installed in your computer, especially the serial number of the software you have installed, such as XP serial numbers. Print out this information also.

Hi, I have formatted the SATA hard drive in my Gateway GT 5408 with Intel motherboard D945GCFG1. I want to load XP pro instead of the original Vista which was on it. Do I need to change the Bios or install...

No, you do not need to install a new driver as long as that is the same sata hard disk tha used to work in your Gateway computer. Just boot into your windows xp installation cd and let the setup continue.

Should you need further assistance, please let me know.

Windows xp won't recognize my new sata hard drive

  • Right click on my computer
  • click- manage
  • a window would open with a menu on the left
  • click
  • storage>disk management
  • that would show all your drivesboth formatted and non-formatted on the right
  • if you can see your hard drive there, then its fine, otherwise tell me I have the alternative.

It is not a controller problem. When you install XP with a SATA drive, You get to a point on the install where you are asked if you have 3rd party divers to install. You have to hit F6 and point it to where the SATA drivers are. You need the SATA divers for you unit. Dell may have them on their website.
Without the SATA drivers, Xp will not see the serial drive.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.

Sorry and thanks for the prompt reply

P1 Express Dual

the information on the bottom of the laptop is:

model: LGP1
Config: P1
Manufacturer: LG Electronics

Thanks you for the reply: What model and MFG is it?
The reason it does not see the hard drive is probably the hard drive is a SATA drive (serial drive). Xp will not see the dive unless you have the SATA driver disk.

Can you suggest what I need to do to reinstall windows or download the image

Am I asking to much for a basic step by step process.

Thanks again

The problem of your laptop is the hard disk type. because acer 5220 laptop is using a SATA hardisk that automatic detected or supported by Vista. But in the windows Xp you need to download the sata driver for windows xp and save it to the floppy drive. In the beginning of windows installation press F6 to install another device or scsi the windows setup search your floppy drive for the sata driver and install it automatically.
