Card not initialized

this error message came up on my camera it is referring to a card that i had used dozens of times with no problem i searched for the error message and it did not come up (why is it that electronic manufactures will create error messages and not even explain what they mean on their web sites?????????? - but that is beside the point) how do i get this card 'initialized'?
