RAM problem My Toshiba Satellite pro m15 s405 will not boot when both of the memory sticks are in it. I can take one of them out and the laptop will come up. I know that it is not bad ram because I can boot up the laptop with either ram stck but when I put them both back in the the laptop will keep rebooting and not come up. I can take one RAM stick and move to either slot and it will come up. Do you have any ideas ?

Hi!

Yes, I've seen this problem before, and it has manifested itself in one of two ways:

1. If the SODIMMs do not match in terms of their manufacturer,

or

2. If the SODIMMs do not match in terms of their capacity

I've seen the problem more often with the former when the chips do not match. Your laptop takes PC2100 DDR SODIMMs (non-ECC), and the maximum allowed is two 512Kb DIMMs for a total of 1GB of memory. For example, if you are trying to match a PC2100 DIMM with a PC2400 DIMM, this could cause the problem you are seeing.

Hope this helps!

First, are the memory chips the same make? I've had instances in the past that two different chips would conflict or develop a conflict and wouldn't work with each other, but would work individually. Most of the time it has been with one Kingston chip and one Infinton chip. If the chips are the same, then the problem will most likely be with one of the memory slots. A failed or failing memory slot can cause this same effect.

Toshiba satellite pro m15 s405 video card replacement

Probably impossible. Most laptop graphics chips are soldered directly to the motherboard requiring a new motherboard if one dies, and very few are actual "cards." That being said, it looks like your's is a nVIDIA GeForce4 420 Go which might be a card. I'll do some research and find out.

Fan issue

Here is a disassembly guide for your laptop:

Not every screw is required to be removed to take out the keyboard but to replace a fan you most likely will have to since the machine needs to be entirely opened up.

Recovery Problem

  1. Check you are really using the right CDs
  2. Using another computer with a CD Writer and a blank CD, download this file:
toshdmi10.exe

Run the program, it will explain how to make a boot CD which you will use to start your computer and fix the problem that makes it say Wrong Machine.
Once this is done you can use the recovery cd's again.
