Question about Garmin StreetPilot 2720 GPS Receiver

System missing It's a StreetPilot 2720. How does one do a hard reset?

Posted by on

  • VARTRS Jul 25, 2008

Tried - doesn't do it. I also tried some of the other buttons and combinations of buttons. The only different things is turning it on while holding the SPEAK button. The display changes from SYSTEM MISSING to HOLDING. But it doesn't reset...

Am I stuck with a piece of junk now?

  • VARTRS Jul 25, 2008

Unfortunately, I can't reliably connect to the USB port. It appears the connector inside the unit is faulty -- if one wiggles the USB cable at the unit it can hit a ppint where the computer sees it, but I can't hold it reliable in that position -- that's how the problem started. I tried two different USB cables -- same story. I may try to take it apart and see if I can fix it.

But I was hoping one could get the old system back without the USB port...

And thanks so much for yout help!

Well, for the 2730 which is basically the same, you turn off the unit, hold down the FIND key and turn it on. Hold for about 5 seconds and release. It should reset the unit.

Can you access the garmin drive from your computer via the usb port?

If you can, you can still save your unit. Go to

to download the firmware manually. the file size is 4.75mb. Then run the file. If you can connect your garmin to the PC and the PC can see it, you have a chance.

Sorry, the above link is for the 2730. This is for the 2720:

I'm not sure if Garmin would sell you just that piece. The usb is secured by two screws and is easily replaceable. Model number or part number is 88910 vi or 94v-06 13

I was told that you turn off the unit, hold down the FIND key and turn it on while holding. Keep pressed for about 10sec. then release.

Unlock Code

When updating the maps, you need to be registered with Garmin. All the numbers came with the unit. If you turn over your Garmin 2720, there will be a number flanked by "*". That is your unit ID. When you register, you must provide that ID. From the site, you can update your maps and you shouldn't need the 25digit key. It's programmed into your unit.

Streetpilot 2720

I don't think you can change the base map, you can however add maps, maybe the UK will fit in what's left. You will need the Europe DVD to do that with an unlock key.

I fixed my C530 on my own. Garmin support will not give you this solution.
I attached the GPS to the computer with the usb cable. I used the file explorer in windows to view the file system on the GPS. I sorted the files by date. Then I moved the files that had a newer date than the last time the GPS worked, to an backup folder on my computer in case I need to restore the files to the GPS again. I than disconnected the GPS from the computer and restarted the GPS. The GPS works perfect now and doesn't enter the demo mode any longer.
