Question about Kenmore 14.1 cu. ft. / 399 liter Upright Freezer 23414

Changing light bulb in a 25 year old freezer

The bulb burned out and we broke it trying to remove it from our manual defrost freezer. The bulb base is not visible in the socket and we don't have a freezer manual to determine if there is a release button or special installation for water safety.

Whatever you do, you MUST unplug the freezer before attempting any repairs... there will not be any release buttons, nor any special installations for water safety... also, take care to avoid cutting yourself on the broken glass..

1) did the whole light bulb glass And internals come out, or is the internal part of the bulb still present?
2) verify that the light bulb is really a screw-in appliance bulb -- look into the center of the broken bulb and see if the metal base has internal ridges -- or if the metal base is smooth on the inside...
3)  if a screw-in appliance bulb:  3a)  if the whole light bulb glass AND internals came out, you will have to probably look very close inside the socket to determine the wall of light bulb base... it should be very thin and flexible and very unlikely you can unscrew it directly -- I've had to take needle-nosed pliers and gently bend and twist until the bulb base came out...
3b)  if part of the glass remains as well as the internal stem, I have heard that one could cut a potato in half and then push the internal part of the potato onto the broken end of the bulb and gently unscrew the bulb by twisting the potato... never tried this so I don't know if it will work -- if the internal stem is still intact, I'd use my fingers and try to gently turn it to unscrew the bulb
4) if it has smooth inside wall -- this is probably a bulb with small exterior pins -- the base should be a little more thicker than the screw-in type, so you should be able to push the bulb base in -- a little give in the spring holding it in -- if you feel this give, then turn carefully counterclockwise and it should pop out...
Again, turn off all electrical power to the freezer, Pull the Plug before attempting any repairs... remove all glass and handle with care...

Chest freezer only freezing at the bottom half of freezer but the goods in the basket aren't frozen, its a year old

Going to have to assume a lot of things... because you put no make or model... (such as self defrosting).

After you have checked that there is NOT excessive FROST BUILD UP (prevents air flow & causes same symptoms...
(defrost issue: different trouble ... comment me back)

Without any mention of EXCESSIVE FROST (which would indicate poor door seal/alignment...
(Not DEFROST FAILURE (dry defrost pan)...

That leaves us with your EVAP FAN...

There are a couple of reasons evaporator fans fail:

(you just eliminated old age in your question... "year old")

- Defective is still a possibility (replace)

- Ice/frost blocked (Full manual DEFROST)

- Physical blockage ((inspect: usually wire or POOR install.

Check your manufacturer's parts list and shop around for the BEST PRICE... There NO variances in quality (just price).

GOOD freezers work because of excellent air flow...!!

And ALWAYS REMEMBER TO TAKE PICURES & REMOVE POWER BEFORE fiddling with every appliance.

Good luck...
(I check in daily... Please do comment if you need me)

Sounds like a defrost problem. Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.
  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer/control board
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.
  • if you already checked this and think it is a different problem then let me know, i will help you figure it out.

these are the usual suspects.

Is my defrost timer broken or my thermostat? The freezer was holding -30 temp but now is at +30.

Is the compressor running? If not - the timer could be stuck in defrost mode. If it is ruinning, then the freezer coil should be cold. If it is choked with frost & ice - then the defrost heater isn't getting powered (bad timer or defrost terminator - or is getting powered but has burned out.

You should allow the ice and frost to melt completely before turning back on again. Typically ice and frost don't build up so bad in a few days time to cause the temperature rise you're describing If getting cold - the compressor and refrigerant is likely OK, if not the defrost circuit is suspect. If compressor running but not getting cold - a refrigerant leak / charge level may be causing the problem.

Kenmore Freezer 106.727581: The freezer ices up and the temp goes up to 34 degrees. If I manually defrost it, it goes to 5 below zero in about 6 hours. How can I determine which of the below need to be...

The refrigerator is supposed to self-defrost approximately four times in every 24 hour period. If one of the components in the self-defrosting system fails, the refrigerator continues to try to cool. Eventually, though, so much frost builds up on the evaporator coils that the circulating fan can't draw air over the coils. There may still be a small amount of cooling because the coils are icy, but with no air flow over the coils, cooling in the refrigerator compartment is quite limited. Poor cooling is often the result of a heavy frost build-up on the evaporator coils. You can't see these coils without removing a panel on the inside of your freezer. A sure sign that there is a build-up is the presence of any frost or ice build-up on the inside walls, floor, or ceiling of the freezer. Such a frost build-up usually indicates a problem in the self-defrosting system or damaged door gaskets. Here's an inexpensive, though inconvenient, way to determine if the problem is with the self-defrosting system. Remove all of the perishable food from the refrigerator and freezer, turn the thermostat in the refrigerator to Off, and leave the doors open for 24 to 48 hours. (Be sure to have several towels ready in case the melting frost and ice causes the drip pan to overflow). This allows the refrigerator to defrost "manually." When the frost and ice build-up has completely melted away, turn the thermostat back to a normal setting. If the refrigerator then cools properly, it indicates a problem with one of three components in the self-defrosting system: The defrost timer The defrost thermostat (also called the bi-metal switch) The defrost heater. I'd let it dry out totally then try it again, some of the electronics may have gotten wet when you defrosted it. Give it a week somewhere warm and dry like a garage. If you didn't attack built up ice in the freezer with a knife while defrosting it it should work after it dries out. Most people end up killing freezers by accidently poking holes in the evap coil while trying to remove built up ice.
