In owners manual it said to slide nightshot mode to off but i do not have that sliding switch. when i go into menu and switch nightshot to off it says its off but it is not and the indicator symbol is still showing on lcd screen

This is the solution, I would only add that it's on the top of the camera itself. Not in the digital menu or backlight button. On my older version, it's between the cassette and lens sections of the camera.
Never having used the nightshot before, my sister left me with the same quandary...
If you really feel up to it the thing has screws, start opening them and take of the plastic cover.
But think 4 times before messing with a 400 $ camera, maybe you'd rather take it to a lab, shouldn't be too expensive. There's many things that can go wrong if you do it yourself
