Hi,
you should get a laser cd cleaning disk. usually has an audio track, or some have a small brush on the cd itself.
The laser adjustment-Calibration, can only be carried out with a multi-meter and a fine jewellers screwdriver.
would recommend a replacement dvd drive, bit more expense but worth it long term.

It spins and clicks but doesnt read

It's good that it still spins as that rules out motor problems. I read lots of advice about cleaning the lens etc which rarely soves the problem. Look I've been repairing these Playstations for years a clicking noise tells us that the unit cannot focus correctly to read the disc. These laser units are not that reliable. It is unlikely to be broken but the PS2 will need to be opened and the DVD potentiometer will need adjusting about one eigth of a turn clockwise which increases the frequency of the laser thus ensure discs are readable once more. You should find plenty of tutorials on the web for this. Professionally an oscilloscope would be used to adjust the laser to a specified frequency accurately. I've adjusted these for years and get it right 99% of the time.
Slimline Ps2 while space saving and aesthetically pleasing had PSU heat problems with the early releases which caused all kinds of instabiliy issues. Hope yours is a newer one.

Long Loads and Lagging

A couple things come to mind. If the lens is dirty, then there will certainly be issues with load times, or load failure. Check your game discs for scratches and scuffs. If a disc has a scratch or too many scuffs on it, it will make it difficult for the laser to read.
Clean your discs, and clean your ps2 lens with a basic ps2 laser cleaning kit. You should be able to find them anywhere.
I don't recommend cleaning the lens without a kit if you are not familiar with the internals of a PS2 or cleaning electronic components. If after cleaning your disc and lens it still gives you issues, there is an angle adjustment gear in the ps2, but we'll cross that bridge only if the cleaning doesn't work.

Goes to Startup Screen when I put a game!

try cleaning the lens. for a slimline PS2, try a Q-tip with a little bit of alcohol on it and lightly touch the lens. gently TWIRL the Q-tip. use the other end of the Q-tip to dry the lens, again, gently twirl the Q-tip. or you could use a laser lens cleaner (see below). for a fat PS2, either use a laser lens cleaner specifically for video game systems (Best Buy, etc.) or go here and go to the very end. www.powerfulguides.com/ps2 hope this helps :D

Hi,
ensure the underside of the disks are clean, and scratch free.
Use a CD lens cleaner, to remove any dust/debris from the laser head.
If still fails, laser-head is weak or in need of re-calibration.

Ps2 problem

It is highly possible that your Laser Lens has melted. You can try to clean the lens. Do Not use alcohol. It is best to use a toothepick lightly to swipe the dust from the lens. If your Lens is Melted, you will need a new laser. Post a picture of your Laser in here and I can tell you which part number you need.

Slimline PS2 only plays PS1 Games and not PS2

Clean the LAsers Lens with Q-tip lightly dampened with Glass cleaner, then dry the lens. Try it see if that gets it going again.

If not your lasers lens and supporting frame is probably melting down. You will need a new laser.
Click on "repair directory" at the bottom of this screen. Then click on "Video Game consoles" Pick a good repair shop.

My ps2 wont load games

hi Melissa Pat,

You must have a Slim model, as only slim models are aggrevating about adjusting and clenaing. If not take a Magnifying glass or Jewelers Loupe to look at the laser lens extremely close.Sometimes it takes a good bit to get it clear.

My PS2

It either needs a cleaning or the laser has worn out. Try GENTLY swabbing the lens with rubbing alcohol and then blowing dry with canned air.
