First thing to do is go onto the start menu, and right click on computer, click on properties and look for the hardware tab. Click on device manager and look for DVD/CD rom drives. Click the plus sign next to that selection and see if you DVD drive is shown or if it has a question mark next to it.
If it is shown and you click on it, it will tell you if the device is working properly. If it is, then you may just need to obtain a DVD/CD cleaning disk. The lenses do get dirty, similar to a audio CD player, and need to be cleaned to read properly.
The only other thing you can do is make sure the device is seated properly into the laptop, but they are secured with a screw on the bottom of the laptop, so that does not often happen.
If the device is not working properly, right click on it and choose uninstall. Restart your computer and the device will be seen as new hardware and a driver installed by windows. If you need an updated driver, go to
www.dell.com, choose support and put your service tag in to get all available drivers for your laptop.
Try these suggestions and see if that solves your problem.
If this solution was helpful, please remember to leave positive feedback for me.
Thank You,
Brian
