Question about Western Digital 500GB My Book World Edition 500 GB Hard Drive

USB device not recognized

According to my laptop, oen of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it. Its connected to USB Root Hub (2 ports) and it is stated as UNKNOWN DEVICE. I've run a memory test on my laptop and no memory errors were reported.

If i go to my device manager, one of the partitioned drives on my EHDD is stated but with an exclamation mark. I had partitioned my EHDD into two - 40 gigs each.

I do not think its my cable ( i guess)...How do i solve this?

    Hi...,

I have the same problem. The drive is about 6 months old, and I've tried the fixes you offered, but none worked. It may be the drive is defective I suppose.

I've tried using the back usb connections, and it is not showing in device manager. I haven't tried connecting to two usb ports? I'm not sure how I could do that. I haven't seen a splitter, and the hubs I have only have one usb out. I just replaced the power supply with a 450 watt model, ...but I don't see how that could be an issue. Can you help? Thanks...

Hi,
if it,s showing in the device manager as an exclamation mark. that means it,s found it, but can,t recognise it.
i,d suggest formatting and partitioning it, with some good software. also ensure that it,s powered via 2 usb cables to laptop, from 1 on the drive itself. some bigger hard-drives, need the extra power to drive them.

Often when this happens, the drive was removed without "Safely Remove Hardware" . Try different computers (Operating Systems) and when recognized, Use the "Safely Remove Hardware" key. Then try it on your laptop.

The thumb drive might have some fault.
Plug it in other OS mainly windows XP and Linux.
If still same problem persists after tried in Linux, problem is with pen drive.
You can ask for a replacement from the dealer as it has guarantee for 5years.

I have Windows XP. I connected the hard drive according to the directions and the first message read USB device not recognized. The second message read Try reconnecting. If windows does not recognize it...

If it is a desktop computer, try connecting to one of the rear USB ports. sometimes drives won't be recognized properly from a secondary USB or HUB. If it's a notebook go into control panel and see if you can find and delete unknown devices in hardware then attach and see if it connects. XP should not need a driver install.

Try going to the control panel, system, hardware, device manager. Find your USB devices in the tree. Right click on them all, and uninstall all of them. Reboot your computer and you may be able to install your USB devices from scratch.

If this dies not work, post your computer type and what system you are running: XP? VISTA? [WIN95? :-) ]

We can fix it -- and recover the data (provided it is recoverable -- which it generally is). If we don't get your data back, we ship the drive back to you and you pay nothing. We've been recovering data for over 16 years and are successful about 85% of the time.
