Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have recently bought a KVM switch off ebay and have connected the two computers I needed to, upto the switch. The first time round the switch didnt work. To check the cables I shut down the computers and swapped the cables round. Again it worked, obviously it is the switch, or at least the button that is not working. Can anyone suggest any common solutions for dealing with KVM switches or is the item I have obviously just not going to work, in which case I need to return the item and ask for a refund. Someone please help.

It is an unbranded PS/2 KVM switch that I did buy cheaply from ebay.

The PC plugged into THE "1" SIDE (WHICHEVER IT IS BECAUSE I HAVE SWAPPED THEM TO CHECK THE CABLES) is working but the push button does not switch from one to the other.

I am also asking the seller from ebay for assistance and not getting anywhere and am getting a little panicked now as if I need to puchase a new one i need to do this sooner rather than later.

Depending on the KVM (Brand, Model etc) there should also be a hot key sequence that will allow you to switch between the PC's. See if the hot key sequence works.
Also, is this a PS/2 KVM or USB ? In some cases with USB adapters you have to let the computer start up while it is set to that port. And if it is USB, does it also have a PS/2 connector? If it does, you want to use one or the other, not both. That can cause it to malfunction.

Raritan SW2USB. Has been working for several years. Today started normally, but suddenly the keyboard was not visible to the switch or either computer. Checked cables, rebooted, etc. Bought a new keyboard...

It sounds like the main switching IC on the board has gone bad...seen it happen before.

Your best bet is to replace it, I would check on Ebay for a good replacement a little cheaper than retail

How to connect 2 computers to a dlink 4 port kvm switch?

The unit comes with all the cables in order to connect up to four computers to one KVM switch. If you're only using two computers, then you'll only need to connect one computer to Computer 1, and the second computer to Computer 2. The KVM will recognize that only two devices are connected, and generally skip the inputs for computers 3 and 4 until they have a device connected.

Repeated IOGear KVM switch failures

As a wild guess, it sounds like a static discharge MIGHT be affecting the switcher causing it to crash.

Try increasing your humidity to 40% and grounding yourself before touching the keyboard... This is the season for these static electricity problems... get nipped all the time and you MAY not even feel it to be enough to zap the switch.

Have a GCS634U KVM that keeps failing to switch. acts like it lost the keyboard

This GCS634U was designed to work with USB keyboards and mice.

First, you need to make sure that your using a direct USB keyboard (no PS/2 to USB adapter).

Second, connect the keyboard directly to the computer and make sure that it's working correctly.

Third, check the connection between the KVM switch and the computers. Try to connect the USB cables of your KVM into different USB ports of the computers.

Last, try to use different USB keyboard to see if the issue is the KVM or the keyboard.

Try to power cycle the KVM switch. Disconnect the KVM from the computers and make sure that there's no even one cable connected to the computers.

Leave the KVM switch disconnected for 10 minutes, then plug it back in. Reboot one computer first and wait until it's fully rebooted. Turn on the second one untill all computers are fully booted up.

If same problem occur, then you need to contact IOGEAR and have them RMA the device.

Thank you and good luck!

I have a kvm switch vista lap and xp desktop stopped working

I've gone through alot of KVM switches. Something in the electronics just gives up. If your keyboard and mouse are the pci type (round connector) then don't switch their locations while the computers are on. Windows won't see the change and you may damage the system. If thy're USB type then switching is OK.

Components not recognised automatically with Belkin Switch2

This is not quite a solution, but a workaround. Take a USB cable extender and intercept the 5V supply wire in it (normally red) with a push to break switch. When you have powered up the PC, push the switch and the KVM will then work (same as your unplugging but much easier to do ). Switch bought on Ebay for 0.99GBP. Belkin tried to insist that I had my laptop plugged in and working if I wanted to use my desktop.

KVM unresponsive

Greg,

Try swapping the KVM cables from the 2008 computer into the Vista computer and see if the problem follows the 2008 computer. This KVM gets the drivers it needs from the OS and the IOGear web site does not show any support for 2008.

It is compatible with a wireless mouse, as long as it is a PS2 mouse.  if it is USB you could try using a converter, but it may not work.

Belkin 2-port kvm switch

If you have the PS2 mouse and keyboard (round plug-in) instead of USB this is an easy install. however if you have USB you will need adapters to make this work, but I do not recommend it since more problems could occur. If you have the PS2 ends first shutdown both computers. remove your monitor, mouse, and keyboard from your computer and attach them to the single end of the switch. Mouse goes to Green, Keyboard to Purple. Take the other ends and connect the first group to your first computer mouse, keyboard, and monitor (same colors as above) and repeat for 2nd group of wires on 2nd computer. turn the computers on. you should get display, keyboard, and mouse for 1st computer. after both boot hit scroll lock 2 times within 2 seconds and then arrow up or down key to change between computers.
