If the Garmin Nuvi Gps has suddenly quit speaking street names and now only says "Turn Left" or Turn Right", please follow the following procedure to restore your Nuvi so that it will begin speaking street names again:

Press the wrench/tools button at the main menu. Select the icon with the lips (language/locale).

You should see (2) buttons labeled American English. The first one makes all of the text on the Nuvi in the English alphabet. The second button is for the voice. If it just says "American English", then it will only say "Turn Left" or "Turn Right". Press this button and select a TTS voice (Text to Speech), like Jill, Jack, Daniel.....etc. That will give you back your street names.

Spoken directions do not give actual street names

Hello, Mike, congratulations on your purchase of the gps. Here's what you should do:

Tap MENU - SETTINGS - REGIONAL.

Choose Voice Profile. This button shows the current language of the voice guidance. By tapping the button, you can select a new one from the list of available languages and speakers. For the speaker to announce actual street names you must select a language that indicates TTS (Text-To-Speech).

To hear a sample voice just tap on any of languages. Tap OK when you have selected the new spoken language.

I have a tomtom xl 330.s and I was told that text to speech would announce the upcoming street name, but the only response that I get is a command to turn left or right.

In order for the text to speech to work you need to make sure that you have a computer voice enabled. Then after you select a computer voice make sure you check the option to say aloud street names.

I have a Garmin 260W. When I first got it it announced the street names , but now it does not say the street names. Just says turn in so may feet etc. Can this be fixed and how??

Not all of the voices can give street names - only the ones enabled for text-to-speech (TTS). Go into the settings and select a voice marked TTS.

260 not calling out street names

- Amazingly, the 260 does not come with Text-To-Speech turned on. The whole point of the upgrade to the 260 is text-to-speech (TTS). So go into the settings and go to "Voice", and choose an English voice with "TTS" in the title. The default voice does tell you to "turn right in point three miles", and all GPS receivers with voice prompting will do this, but that's not Text-To-Speech. TTS actually pronounces (or does the best it can) at pronouncing street names. So instead of "turn right", you get "Turn right on Jackson street".

Check your voice prompts.  make sure you are using either Jack or Jane.  the standard voice is the same as the voice on C330 which only gives you directions.
