Just says lens error and wont stop making grinding noise

Try one of these two fixes, if they dont work for you follow the link below for further troubleshooting.

http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html

Fix #1: Remove the batteries from the camera, wait a few minutes. Put a fresh set of batteries back in (preferably rechargeable NiMH 2500mah or better) and turn the camera on. If that didn't work, try pressing and holding the Function or OK button while turning the camera on.
Fix #2: If the camera's batteries ran down completely while the its lens was still open, the camera may show a lens error or not start properly when new batteries are installed. Remove the memory card and keep it removed, then install the new batteries. When you turn the camera on with the card removed it may come back to life, as this triggers a reset in some cameras. Error E30 (for older Canon's) means that you don't have a memory card installed, so turn it off, slip in the SD card and turn it on one last time

Ge w1200 new when turned on reads lens error will not respond

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ... Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to this can only be corrected by professional repair. But, here are some things that you can do that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:

LENS ERROR

This is probably THE single most common failure among digital cameras. There's a halfway chance of fixing it yourself, described here: http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html

GE A730 LENS ERROR

Hi sadloserx:
I am inserting this from a previous post, since this seems to be the same problem.
Also lens problems have to be described in full to see what is wrong. The following will give you some idea as to what I am saying.

This camera is telling you that there is a problem with the lens, either in the tracking, mechanical, or electrical circuit.
Try this: If the lens extends at all... then pull on the lens or push in to try to reset the tracking of the lens.
If the lens does not extend at all and makes noise, then it has problems in the lens gearing or motor.
If the lens makes no noise at all and you get the error with the shut down, then more than likely there is nothing that can be done.

Try this at your own risk:
With the camera off, gently hit the camera on a padded (folded towel) cloth on a solid surface, using one of the corners. This may jar the internal parts enough to make the camera work again.
BY doing this, you do risk damaging the camera beyond repair, however, if you have a camera not working anyway, it may be worth it.
I have fixed two cameras in the past this way. However, nothing is guaranteed.

Finally:
Find a repair shop and have it fixed. (These kinds of repairs can cost $150.00 or more). That will depend on your value and the age as well of the camera.
Sell it as is or for parts on a site such as Ebay.

Try this...Blow compressed air in the gaps around the lens barrels with the idea of blowing out any sand or grit that may be in there jamming the lens. Other variations include blowing with a hair dryer in “no heat” setting, or sucking the gaps with a vacuum (careful with this one).
