CHANGING OUT A FAN MOTOR ON A GOODMAN CONDENSOR UNIT. OLD MOTOR HAS, PURPLE,BLACK AND BROWN WIRES. NEW FASCO MOTOR HAS BLACK,WHITE, BROWN AND BROWN-WHITE WIRES. HOW TO I HOOK THEM UP?

The black and white wires get 220 from the contactor. The brown and brown/white go to the capacitor. I do hope you bought a matching capacitor to go with the new motor. They don't cost much and make the hook-up way easier.

the new ge fan requires its own capacitor, the brown and the brown/white go direct to new fan capacitor. black to relay (leg one of power) purple to relay (leg two of power. the compressor will have a wire to the relay and the other to the herm terminal. you now will have nothing to the original capacitor fan terminal.
The new motor will have the diagram showing this. you need the capacitor that goes with the new motor. the grainger guy should have sold that to you with the motor.

I am replacing my old a/c fan motor with a new one. The old motor is an A.O Smith B13400-251 and has black, brown, and a purple wire and was connected to a dual capacitor. The new motor is an A.O Smith...


For one, thank you for posting all the info, it really helps! On your new motor, the white has became your purple, black is black, and your brown/brown and white wires go to each side of the new capacitor, there should only be 2 terminals. You can leave the "Fan" terminal blank on the old capacitor now. Just be sure to attach the new capacitor somewhere secure, they are smaller, but can be a pain. So just to recap:
Black is still black.
White is what purple used to be (Com)
Brown on 1 side of new capacitor
Brown/White on opposite side of new capacitor.

Hi, the new motor takes its own capacitor to run it. This is what the 2- brown wires are for, one will have a white stripe. You will need to but a seperate run capacitor for this motor, a 5 uf, 7.5, or what ever it calls for. they should have told you when you bought the motor. It will have to spade connectors on it where the brown wires connect alone. Use the dual capacitor if that is what you have for the other 220 volt wires.Black and purple will be your 2 hot wires.You can connect either one to the old capacitor on the fan terminal and the other to the load side of the contactor, so when the contactor closes it will energize the motor.Or, take both the black and the purple wires and to the load side ( outlet side ) of the contactor, connect one to one side and the other to the other side. The line side is where your 2 hot wires that connect to the contactor from the incoming wires from the electrical box, you want to be on the other end. I would connect the black to the contactor load side and purple to the old capacitor as long as the old wiring is still on it as it has to be fed by a hot wire from the contactor. Each wire, blk, and purple has to have 120 volts to each one and you can get this a couple of ways. The contactor has several terminals that are not used and if you wire them on the outlet side, they will only be energized when the contactor is closed on a call from the stat, very easy to do. You will have to get a coulple of crimp on connectors to put on the ends of the wires, but the brown ones should already have them for this capacitor. Do not try to put the brown wires on the old run capacitor as you will burn out the new motor! Go get the small run cap for these 2 wires for about $10. I know that you can do this wiring change just remember the blk is hot 120, and purple is hot 120, = 240.volts. If you have removed all of the wires from the old capacitor, then use the contactor to connect to. The compressor wires must stay on the old run cap on the hermetic side and this old cap. must be fed by a hot wire from the contactor to the common terminal, that is marked with a C..If you look at the new motor diagram, it will show you also. I have an old york unit model #HICF030506a and just replaced the fan unit but forgot where to connect the 4 wires . I have a tan, tan w/white strip , black , and purple wire. Can anyone help???


Did the old fan use 4 wires or 3 wires. If it used 4 then connect the brown and brown/white to the capacitor. Then connect the Black to L1 and Purple to L2. If it used 3 wires then tape up or put a wire nut on the brown/white wire. Connect the brown wire to the Fan terminal if the capacitor has 3 terminals or to either side if it only has 2 terminals. Look at the motor data plate. It should have the wires labeled on it. Purple should be the run wire, connect it to the Comm terminal of the capacitor if it has 3 terminals or the opposite side from brown if it has 2 terminals. Another wire should go from this connection to L1. Then connect the Black wire which is common to L2. I hope this isn't too confusing. Let me know if I need to explain it better. Also if the motor data plate says that Black is run and Purple is common just adapt the instructions above to the wire colors.

look on the side of the motor it will have a wiring diagram your fan supplies voltage to the capacitor its self so two of your wires go to the capacitor not just one. good luck

I just purchased an fse1028sf to replace my faulty fan motor. I purchased it from a a/c supply store. My existing fan only had three wires. They were brown, black and purple. Black to: capacitor "c"....


Hi, this is a different wiring diagram then what you have . The 2 brown/wht wires are for the run cap only. Black and white are t-1 and t-2. They sold you a motor that takes its own run capacitor to run it with just both brown wires. Take the diagram from the new motor back along with your original. They will give you the right run cap to go with this motor. Yes, the red wire is power to fire your existing cap and old motor. You will need another cap to run this motor. Don't put the 2 brn/white striped wires on the old cap! They have to be alone on there own run cap. Go back to the parts house and they will show you very fast the wiring diagram and give you the cap. This is a very easy fix when they give you what you need. Keep me posted and ask them to give you what you need to run the motor. A 5 uf run cap perhaps?

Before attempting any of these recommendations, First disconnect all the power sources and check your wiring diagrams on the motor and condensing unit.
On the old capacitor if you look on the top near each of the three terminals. Are they marked, fan - C - herm? If they are that is a dual capacitor and that needs to stay because that is also your compressor capacitor.
The Red wire from the conductor is Run and it's connected to C on the old capacitor.
Follow the Yellow wire and see if it goes to the S or start terminal on the compressor, if it does then that is the Start wire for your compressor and it connects to herm on the capacitor.
For the fan motor a lot of times the wiring connections are printed on the motor label.
Check the label, Purple should be run and connect to C on the old capacitor.
Black should be Common and it connects to the opposite side of the contactor as the Red wire. If the Red wire connects to T1 then the Black wire connects to T2.
The Brown wire shoud be the start wire on the fan motor and it connects to the Fan terminal on the old capacitor.
Now if you want to use the new fan capacitor. Take the Purple wire from the motor and look for any marks (red paint or a dash) on or beside the terminals on the new capacitor. If there is an identifying mark then connect the Purple wire to that terminal, if no marks you can connect it to either terminal. Then you need a jumper wire from C on the old capacitor to the purple side of the new capacitor. Then take the brown wire and connect it to opposite terminal of the new capacitor.

Told motor was bad, replaced motor, new motor does not run


Black to Black, Purple to White and the new motor requires a run capacitor which brown goes to one side of capacitor and brown/white goes to the othe side of the capacitor. This is providing the old motor is a single speed. If the old motor is a two speed you have an incorrect replacement motor.

  1. This is what your wiring should look like if you are using two caps. then you should be using a potential relay as well. This is the diagram for using a potential relay. Hope it helps you.
