Windows XP will not recognize Garmin 200W

I bought a new usb cable and plugged my garmin 200w into my computer. Windows XP does not recognize the Garmin although the Garmin screen does show a picture of a computer with a garmin plugged into it. I have spent over two hours on hold and talking about five minutes with Garmin support, They can't figure out why I can't download the lates maps. Any suggestions?

The problem is when I plug my Nuvi 200W into my computer using XP SP2, the computer does not recognize the device. I downloaded the Garmin drivers and when it prompts me to connect the device, a screen pops up saying I need to connect the device and wait 20 seconds. After I wait, nothing happens. My computer does not recognize my Garmin.

I've tried loading the Garmin USB driver. When I download the driver, and before the driver is completely installed, you get instructions to connect the garmin so the download of the driver will be completed. When i connect the device it doesn't recognize it so the driver installation stops. This is driving my up crazy !. My USb's are 2.0 and I am running XP with SP2. The USB ports are all working. I have plugged other USB devices in and they are immediately recognized.

I have the same problem. I think Garmin needs to hire some competent folks and recall all its faulty products.

The owner's manual is profoundly poorly written. Garmin gets an F- for documentation.

I have the exact same problems AND I have already tried all of the solutions that were given as options. HEEEEEEEEELLLP!!!

Prior to connecting the Garmin 200W to a USB port, my computer recognized my Hard drive (C), two CD drives (D&E) and an external hard drive (F), connected to a USB port.

When I connect USB cable from an unused USB port to a the Garmin 200w, two things occur - 1. My computer does not recognize my 200W unit. 2. The computer now recognizes on drives C, D & E -- No longer recognizing the external HD (F)

I had the same issue. I would plug it in and it would recognize the device then it would disappear.

What I did to solve the problem was to first turn on my Gamin 200w. After it was finished loading maps then I plugged in in to the usb port. My machine recognized the device without any problems. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium. Hope that helps.

It turned out not to be my Garmin 200W, but a faulty USB cable. I exchanged the one that I just purchased for a different one and it works perfect.

I'm having this issue and windows recognized it as a garmin usb gps, then it still ends up saying there was a problem with the installation and the hardware may not run correctly. this is ridiculous - returning this if Garmin can't help on Monday.

I ran into this and eventually realized that the Garmin was locked up. To reboot my Garmin unit (nuvi 765T), I just needed to slide the on/off switch to the left and hold it there for about 10 seconds (until the unit powered off). Once I then turned it back on I was back in business.

Chiefdon was right on. I switched USB cables and it worked perfectly. I think I was maybe using a blackberry USB cable which may have been the problem.

Rileyjb SOLUTION #3 was correct. My computer (XP) wouldn't recognise my 255w so I unplugged it from the usb cable, powered it off and then on again, and once it was loaded up to the normal navigation start screen I plugged it into the computer and BINGO the unit was recognised. I'm downloading my update as we speak.

1- did you load the USB driver for your garmin unit BEFORE plugging in the unit? Is your USB 1.1 or 2.0 compliant?

Most of the time, you need to install the software first before plugging in any usb device. You can go to GARMIN.COM and download your usb driver and run it, then plug in your garmin unit. If your USB is 1.1, you may experience a problem. Also, what version of XP are you running? have you updated to SP2?

Another thing you can do is reset your USB devices. Click on START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL, SYSTEM. Click on the tab HARDWARE, click on DEVICE MANAGER, go down to UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS CONTROLER. and delete everything there. Make sure you have the original drivers for your particular system just in case windows can't recognize them. Have you tried plugging in another USB device to see if windows recognizes that? You may have a problem with your USB ports. Some Compaq/HP models, the USB ports just stop working. I had a client go out and purchase a usb card to solve the problem.

Try this, plug in your garmin, turn it on, and run webupdater. If webupdater finds it that's all you need.

You can also rule out the computer by plugging your garmin into another system and see if that system reads it. Then you know for sure the problem is with your computer. If the other system doesn't find it, or webupdater can't find it, then for sure the problem is with the unit. If it's under 1 year, it's on warrantee.

PLEASE talk me through as to how to update my Garmin 200W series...

Hello,

Below are steps to successfully update your Garmin Nuvi GPS;

Plug one end of the USB cable into your GPS and the other end into your desktop or laptop computer. The GPS device will load the appropriate driver automatically, and a message on your GPS tells you that it is connected to your computer via USB.

Open your Internet browser of choice and type in the following web address: "http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=999-99999-27"

Download the appropriate version of the software for your computer (Windows or Apple) and Install the Web-Updater by following the wizard (accept defaults).

Click "Start," "All Programs," "Garmin" and " Web-Updater" to update your firmware and your maps. Periodically check and make sure your software is current.

Good luck.

Garmin Nuvi 200W car cable fell apart. Bought new universal cable which charges gps in car but screen will only show a symbol (looks like a cable plugged into a computer) that's not explained anywhere in...

i have gone through more cables than you can imagine, if you plug in the cable that gives you the computer symbol, slide the power button to what would be the off position then slide it back to lock
1 or 2 slides should take it out of this mode, i had the same problem.
