Windows XP will not recognize Garmin 200W

I bought a new usb cable and plugged my garmin 200w into my computer. Windows XP does not recognize the Garmin although the Garmin screen does show a picture of a computer with a garmin plugged into it. I have spent over two hours on hold and talking about five minutes with Garmin support, They can't figure out why I can't download the lates maps. Any suggestions?

The problem is when I plug my Nuvi 200W into my computer using XP SP2, the computer does not recognize the device. I downloaded the Garmin drivers and when it prompts me to connect the device, a screen pops up saying I need to connect the device and wait 20 seconds. After I wait, nothing happens. My computer does not recognize my Garmin.

I've tried loading the Garmin USB driver. When I download the driver, and before the driver is completely installed, you get instructions to connect the garmin so the download of the driver will be completed. When i connect the device it doesn't recognize it so the driver installation stops. This is driving my up crazy !. My USb's are 2.0 and I am running XP with SP2. The USB ports are all working. I have plugged other USB devices in and they are immediately recognized.

I have the same problem. I think Garmin needs to hire some competent folks and recall all its faulty products.

The owner's manual is profoundly poorly written. Garmin gets an F- for documentation.

Prior to connecting the Garmin 200W to a USB port, my computer recognized my Hard drive (C), two CD drives (D&E) and an external hard drive (F), connected to a USB port.

When I connect USB cable from an unused USB port to a the Garmin 200w, two things occur - 1. My computer does not recognize my 200W unit. 2. The computer now recognizes on drives C, D & E -- No longer recognizing the external HD (F)

I had the same issue. I would plug it in and it would recognize the device then it would disappear.

What I did to solve the problem was to first turn on my Gamin 200w. After it was finished loading maps then I plugged in in to the usb port. My machine recognized the device without any problems. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium. Hope that helps.

It turned out not to be my Garmin 200W, but a faulty USB cable. I exchanged the one that I just purchased for a different one and it works perfect.

I'm having this issue and windows recognized it as a garmin usb gps, then it still ends up saying there was a problem with the installation and the hardware may not run correctly. this is ridiculous - returning this if Garmin can't help on Monday.

I ran into this and eventually realized that the Garmin was locked up. To reboot my Garmin unit (nuvi 765T), I just needed to slide the on/off switch to the left and hold it there for about 10 seconds (until the unit powered off). Once I then turned it back on I was back in business.

Chiefdon was right on. I switched USB cables and it worked perfectly. I think I was maybe using a blackberry USB cable which may have been the problem.

Rileyjb SOLUTION #3 was correct. My computer (XP) wouldn't recognise my 255w so I unplugged it from the usb cable, powered it off and then on again, and once it was loaded up to the normal navigation start screen I plugged it into the computer and BINGO the unit was recognised. I'm downloading my update as we speak.

1- did you load the USB driver for your garmin unit BEFORE plugging in the unit? Is your USB 1.1 or 2.0 compliant?

Most of the time, you need to install the software first before plugging in any usb device. You can go to GARMIN.COM and download your usb driver and run it, then plug in your garmin unit. If your USB is 1.1, you may experience a problem. Also, what version of XP are you running? have you updated to SP2?

Another thing you can do is reset your USB devices. Click on START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL, SYSTEM. Click on the tab HARDWARE, click on DEVICE MANAGER, go down to UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS CONTROLER. and delete everything there. Make sure you have the original drivers for your particular system just in case windows can't recognize them. Have you tried plugging in another USB device to see if windows recognizes that? You may have a problem with your USB ports. Some Compaq/HP models, the USB ports just stop working. I had a client go out and purchase a usb card to solve the problem.

Try this, plug in your garmin, turn it on, and run webupdater. If webupdater finds it that's all you need.

You can also rule out the computer by plugging your garmin into another system and see if that system reads it. Then you know for sure the problem is with your computer. If the other system doesn't find it, or webupdater can't find it, then for sure the problem is with the unit. If it's under 1 year, it's on warrantee.

I have a garmin nuvi and the cable that you put into your cigarette lighter will not work. I changed the fuse and it still will not keep the unit charged. I can charge it on my computer with a usb cable....

Do you see a lightning bolt symbol over the battery bar graph? This indicates that its charging. If it's under warranty, please contact Garmin on their website. www.garmin.com and call them. No need to worry about this if its under warranty. Send them your charger too.

The 300 does NOT have bluetooth. See this Garmin link:

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=339

The 360 has bluetooth. In order to have bluetooth, you must have the main board inside that has the bluetooth circuitry AND the firmware to support it. The 300 does NOT have the circuitry for bluetooth.
