Question about Garmin nuvi 200W GPS Receiver
I bought a new usb cable and plugged my garmin 200w into my computer. Windows XP does not recognize the Garmin although the Garmin screen does show a picture of a computer with a garmin plugged into it. I have spent over two hours on hold and talking about five minutes with Garmin support, They can't figure out why I can't download the lates maps. Any suggestions?
I had the same issue. I would plug it in and it would recognize the device then it would disappear.
What I did to solve the problem was to first turn on my Gamin 200w. After it was finished loading maps then I plugged in in to the usb port. My machine recognized the device without any problems. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium. Hope that helps.

It turned out not to be my Garmin 200W, but a faulty USB cable. I exchanged the one that I just purchased for a different one and it works perfect.

I'm having this issue and windows recognized it as a garmin usb gps, then it still ends up saying there was a problem with the installation and the hardware may not run correctly. this is ridiculous - returning this if Garmin can't help on Monday.

I ran into this and eventually realized that the Garmin was locked up. To reboot my Garmin unit (nuvi 765T), I just needed to slide the on/off switch to the left and hold it there for about 10 seconds (until the unit powered off). Once I then turned it back on I was back in business.

Chiefdon was right on. I switched USB cables and it worked perfectly. I think I was maybe using a blackberry USB cable which may have been the problem.

Rileyjb SOLUTION #3 was correct. My computer (XP) wouldn't recognise my 255w so I unplugged it from the usb cable, powered it off and then on again, and once it was loaded up to the normal navigation start screen I plugged it into the computer and BINGO the unit was recognised. I'm downloading my update as we speak.

1- did you load the USB driver for your garmin unit BEFORE plugging in the unit? Is your USB 1.1 or 2.0 compliant?
Most of the time, you need to install the software first before plugging in any usb device. You can go to GARMIN.COM and download your usb driver and run it, then plug in your garmin unit. If your USB is 1.1, you may experience a problem. Also, what version of XP are you running? have you updated to SP2?
Another thing you can do is reset your USB devices. Click on START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL, SYSTEM. Click on the tab HARDWARE, click on DEVICE MANAGER, go down to UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS CONTROLER. and delete everything there. Make sure you have the original drivers for your particular system just in case windows can't recognize them. Have you tried plugging in another USB device to see if windows recognizes that? You may have a problem with your USB ports. Some Compaq/HP models, the USB ports just stop working. I had a client go out and purchase a usb card to solve the problem.
