There are several levels of "reset" I'm aware of through the brain damage this AIO has caused me over the years.
Level 1 - turn it off (it should say "self test," unplug it, wait 20-30 sec (and this is really elegant) hold down the # and the 3 keys simultaneously, then with your third hand, plug the power back in. Do not release the # and 3 keys until the "partial reset" message goes off the LCD. When you turn it back on, it will ask some simple setup questions.
Level 2 is achieved by the same unplug & wait stroke, only hold down the # and the 6 keys. That's essentially a "deeper reset"
Level 3 resets everything. Turn off, unplug, wait and this time hold down the # and the 9 keys while plugging back in.

When i get "scanner failure," this will work for some time.
Also, I use the excellent Vuescan software (www.hamrick.com) which frequently can communicate with the HP when its own software will not.

Lucky me got a new printer today after one last @#%ing from HP. I have a small, but decent library of tech bulletins for this rig if anyone's interested. Send me a note and I'll zip it up and send you my 'cone of knowledge'.

We have a Lexmark X342n All in one device. We have forgotten the password we set through the web interface. How can we reset the device to factory default settings???

After powering up the printer, press Menu, * key, # key (do not hold them, just press and release). You should see a secret menu, the first option being "Serial number". From there, I scrolled down to Network menu -> NVRAM reset to reset the network card. There also seems to be a Utilities menu which allows a full system reset.
