Hi,

If it is not a hardware fault and your original query is "Is there any way to reset it?", pls see below procedures for an alternate reset. This reset would access the hidden service menu. This is of course assuming that:

  • there is no hardware fault; and
  • everything else works except external memory.
Further, there are risks (as I was made to understand) since any mistake could make the problem worst. Follow procedures/try at your discretion.
  1. Press and hold menu button (standard menu will appear in the display)
  2. Press and hold shutter button(at this point, both the menu button and shutter button are still held down)
  3. Then (while continuing to hold the menu button and shutter button down throughout the sequence below):
  • 2xTELE (press right zoom button twice)
  • 1xWIDE (press left zoom button once)
  • (a blue information screen appears here)
  • TRASH (press trashcan icon button once)
  • PLAY (press upper left button on back of camera)
  • 2xTELE (press right zoom button twice)
  • 1xWIDE (press left zoom button once)
  1. The developer menu will appear (you can release the shutter button and menu button now).
  2. If you scroll through the choices, you'll find the reset choices. But, be careful that you DO NOT go into any of the AF calibration menus. One of them will start a calibration of the AF with no further warning. If you don't have a test target setup at the correct distance to the camera, it will mess up your AF very badly.
The above was originally posted here.

The alternative is to crack open the camera, remove the back-up memory battery to revert the firmware to factory default condition.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Ok i am a new expert to assist you in the existing list.

and i would suggest you to reinstall the camera coftware.
because you have already done lot of attempts with the hardware

and it now does not seem to be a hardware problem

and hence take it to the company and reinstall the camera software.

that will solve your problem

if it does not solve the problem then you have have to service the unit. no other go.

thank you

Try using an card reader on a computer and format the SD memory card, or use another computer to format the sd card. Then try using it if still nogo then its the memory card shiny gold plate which is not being getting a positive contact in the camera slot with its connecting pins. in that case try to clean the contact using alcohol that should resolve the problem

The Minolta DiMAGE G500 has a dual card-slot system for flexible image storage.
BothMemory Sticks and SecureDigital (SD) Cards can be used alone or in combination.
Whenboth memory card types are used with the camera at the same time, up 640MB of data canbe saved depending on the capacity of the cards.

See Ginko's solution. You have a bad pin that contacts with your memory card. A decent shop can fix this or the factory will. Chasing around bushes looking for an easter egg that fixes your problem magically is not going to help you out.

Turn off the camera>start all over> remove the card> remove the batteries> relace new batteries first> then turn on the camera> then try resetting to factory defaults> then if successful put a clean card in the slot. It could be however that your camera is saying goodbye! Good Luck.

This seems to be a tough one. You might want to take it into a camera store or even a used camera store. They may have someone knowledgeable on this particular camera. You can then decide if the solution is costlier than a new camera. Good Luck.

Ya think it might be time for an upgrade!?! This is obviously a malfunction in the camera. This is an older obsolete model, so take it to get it fixed (if you can), or breakdown and buy a new one. You can get a new camera with twice the capabilities at half the price you paid for this one new.

Connect the camer to the computer using the usb cable,
Using an antivirus program, scan the camera, It should show up as a removable disk, If its clean then you will need to contact the manufacturer to find out if they have a reset utility avilable. if not here is how to HARD RESET IT. WARNING THIS CAN DAMAGE THE CAMERA IF USED INCORRECTLY OR BY NOT PUTTING IT BACK TOGETHER PROPPERLY

1.) OPEN UP THE CAMERA
2.) LOOK FOR THE LARGEST IC, USUALLY A SAMSUMG
3.) HOLD THE CAMERA WHERE YOU CAN READ THE TEXT PROPPERLY
4.) Remove the battery from the board(u need to unsolder the contacts)
5.) count 4 pins from the top of the ic , left to right.
6.) using a small bladed screwdriver, ground of pins 4 and 5
7.) re assemble

This will remove everything from the cameras memory restoring it back to factory state.

If this fails or you are afraid to try it, please contact your nearset service center.

  • Rishi Roshan Ali Jul 31, 2008

If repair parts arent avilabe then try what i suggested above.. Just be careful,

  • Rishi Roshan Ali Aug 01, 2008

Ok the problem is the preprocessor, cmos. its eighter frozen or damaged. if its frozen a hard reset as described above will eighter unfreeze it, or kill it. It cannot be changed without changing the entire board and as you said parts are not avilable. You have 2 choices,

1.) try to unfreeze it as i described above

    2.) use it as is.

The memory cards the you used on your camera are they working on different cameras or devices that has a SD card slot? this will help you to isolate the problem if its really the cards or the sd card slot on camera that has problem.

You're model has 2MB internal and uses SD HC up to 16MB Not all SD are the same those with 150x will work but might cause problems if they're not true SD HC. Brands also work different than other's. SanDisk are okay and Kingston brand. Try SD HC Class 4 4GB. There are different Class ratings also, 4 and 6 are the best ones. Don't get 1 or 2 those are slower.

Storage capacity
(NORMAL mode with 16MB SD memory card)

Check the card contacts--if the card isn't making good contact in-camera, you'll get hold of card errors. This happens when someone touches the contacts on the card. Usually cleaning will work unless something sticky get on it. Most memory cards do have exposed contacts, so you enjoy to be careful when handling them ...

Format the card in the camera if you grasp an error message. It may just entail to be formatted.

hope this may help;

What is the size of the SD card that you are using? Maybe its too large. Some cameras doesn't support large size SD card. Try to use lower size. I believe the supplied SD card is 16MB. Try to use card with MB size. About the fw, you can save it on the camera's internal memory. Just plug the camera directly to your computer using USB, copy the firmware there and run it.

The firmware does not cause this problem, itis dirty or broken contact in sd card slot

If you want to upload the firmware you can connect the camera to the computer and upload firmware on internal memory, so that you dont need the SD card.
I dont think this will fix it , sounds more like a problem with SD card slot contacts, a repairman must take camera apart to test and fix them.
In any case connect camera to pc, upload firmware on internal memory (hope space is enough), and give it a try.
Also ensure card is fitted properly in the slot

  • Ginko
    Ginko Jul 31, 2008

Even if contacts are not dirty there may be a broken contact inside. Try first firmware upgrade, using computer as suggested and let see.

  • Ginko
    Ginko Jul 31, 2008

you tried memory stick as well? inside the camera? what kind of memory stick apart from SD cards fits inside your camera slot?
The contact inside your camera slot may be faylty, not contact on card, if card works and your camera does not read any card usually is like that.

  • Ginko
    Ginko Jul 31, 2008

Now I understand , probably is just a matter of sttings, maybe the memory priority is set on internal memory

    Then download the

    E INSTRUCTION MANUAL
check page 105 on set memory priority

  • Ginko
    Ginko Aug 01, 2008

Did you check memory priority settings?
Did you try uploading firmware from computer?

  • Ginko
    Ginko Aug 01, 2008

"memory priorty is stuck on the internal memory" ensure thet both memories are inside when you try to change this setting.

  • Ginko
    Ginko Aug 01, 2008

Did you try firmware update from internal memory?
If you try thet and did not work it means that the contacts inside the camera are defictive, as I thought on first post.
The fact that it does not read either one memori card SD or stick means nothing. Often the contacts for the two slot are merged into same connection on board, is the same wiring you have on many multi card readers, all contacts go to same hub.
Try update, if it does not work it is an internal problem, brobably contacts or someething blown on camera pcb.

I bought a Kingston 4GB Class 6 SDHC Card for this camera, and when I put it in the camera, it doesn't seem to be recognized by the camera.

The G500 works with SD cards. While SDHC cards will fit into the slot, they are electronically incompatible and will not work. You need to use SD cards, 2GB and smaller.

You need to format the internal memory with no card in the camera. Once it is erased, your card should work properly.

Memory card sd

Hi,

Appreciate the direct "Ask Me".

It would seem that you would have to do it all over again, that is download the pictures again to the SD memory card. But before doing this, you would need to format the SD card using the digicam rather than the PC.

In some cases, it maybe that the picture files (downloaded from the computer) does not match the image property requirements of the digicam so that even if the image files are stored in the SD memory card, the camera is unable to list/view them

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Hi,

Might it be that what you refer to as "reset the memory" is actually format the memory, that is erase all its content and lay down a new, fresh, clean system?

If yes, then in the SET UP menu, select FORMAT and press right, select media type (what ever memory it is you can cleaned/formatted), press either right or MENU/SET button. To confirm select YES with left or right and press again the MENU/SET button. Once it starts to format " Now FORMAT" displayed would be shown with a graph at the bottom indicating how much of the memory has been formatted and how many more to go.

If no, pls post back what is displayed in the screen.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

"CARD IS PROTECTED"

are the images locked? on internal memory? or is it on a sd card?

(SD and MS cards feature a write lock. Unlock the card.)

also

This maybe useful to anyone whose "lock" toggle has fallen off. The plastic toggle is there to activate a switch in the device (like in digital camera) not on the card. To get the device to see the card as unlocked, just glue a small piece of plastic to fill the slot in the side of the SD card casing. You will loose the SD card lock feature but at least you will be able to write data to the card again Also, if you don't feel like glueing just stick a piece of tape on the side that will work too

Try using an SD card reader on a PC and format the SD memory card that way.
Is it a cheap/generic card. Sometimes they are just not durable.

How to use a minolta dimage g500 camera

Do you mean the memory card in your camera or do you mean another device?

First check that your memory card works in another device. There is a lock button on the SD card that needs to be unlocked.

Second, check that your camera settings have the SD card option selected. You can select the destination of your images.
