Did you try installing the Windows Live Messenger 2009 and if Yes please check if all the Instances of Windows Live Messenger 2008 has been uninstalled and if yes and uninstall the Windows Live Messenger 2011 and check what OS is he using Windows 7 32 bit or 64 Bit and download it from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowslive/rediscoverconversation/
Windows Live Messenger is tied into Internet Explorer... open internet explorer go to Tools> Options> Internet Option>Advanced>Reset... once reset close internet Explorer, then re open it and it will ask you a few Questions when complete try MSN again and I am sure it will be good again :)
Windows Live essentials 2011 was writen for Windows 7 users only..
You need to uninstall windows live and reinstall the previous version of the live software.
