The high pitched squeal you refer to comes from a faulty component called a
capacitor ... these store power in a circuit to compensate for AC or alternating current, thus allowing an appliance to operate continuously.
The component itself is relatively inexpensive, and would take around 20-40 minutes to isolate and replace, hence it would be relatively cheap to fix.
Having a repairman take a look and explaining the noise as above, would help narrow down the complaint.
The display is faint because of the lack of constant power getting to the display.
I bought it used i was told is it working ok, but when it seems to work good in few minutes its start to squeals..also can not finalize the disc after you have been recorder to the disc..
