Question about AppleWorks 6 for mac

2 Answers

Appleworks crash I use Appleworks 6 and today when I type anything it crashes.  I can open an existing document or create a new document.  I can manipulate with the mouse - eg create a shape in a draw document, but the moment I touch a key on the keyboard it crashes - in any document, new or old.  I re-installed the program and deleted the preferences and I repaired permissions on the computer - no better.  I then did a clean install of Mac OS Tiger ie wiped the hard drive and re-installed everything.  I have updated all the software so that I am using OS 10.4.11.  I have reset the PRAM and changed the keyboard and the mouse.  I have updated the appleworks to version 6.2.9 which I think is the last they made. No good it still crashes as soon as I try to type. All other functions on the computer are absolutely fine.  Help please !  any ideas?

the unit was purchased new in May 04.  The problem has not occurred before.  One issue that may be relevant is that my son installed an upgrade to a game on it just before this happened - it was a classic environment game - Theme Park World which only works with an upgrade.  I can't see it now but I wonder if it altered the firmware.

Is it just the Appleworks that crashes and does it lock the computer up requiring a reboot?

This appears to be a software related problem, instead of hardware. It's possible that you have a software conflict with the game. If you can find it, remove it and see if your Apple 6 works. If you still don't see it or can't find it , try a system restore to a point where you either remember it working or before the upgrade for the game was installed. If it's a software or firmware glitch then this should cure it.

it seems that there was a problem on the keypad area or in the parts which our finger and palm touches... theres a possibility that theres a malfunction or error on the sensor or in the key press area... it is better to be check up and repair it by an authorized apple service center..

they have a spare parts if its needed to change something on the unit..

    let me know...

    thank you

Created document with Appleworks wp, when I opened it later it was changed to ASCll spreadsheet. How can I change it back to original document?

Hi
I assume by "Appleworks wp" you mean "Pages"
- have you tried opening it from within the software? By first starting the application and then via the "file" menu select "Open..."?
Hope this helps

I am working on a Mac 10.5.8 imac computer. I have used appleworks forever and dont want to let it go. EVERY time I start Appleworks 6 from the doc it crashes. I can open AW from another document but...

Appleworks is now a discontinued product and has been replaced by iWork. Its best if you start to learn how to use iWork instead since applework documents will have very limited compatibility.

I can't open a disk that contains all of my old appleworks documents using Mac OSX10.5

Appleworks support stopped at 10.4. Best thing I can tell you is to try NeoOffice or iWork.

And I/O error occurred when trying to open an Appleworks doc

That message in Pages means the file is not an AppleWorks 6 file, possibly AppleWorks 5. Are you using the same version? Not all are backward compatible, or require you to have the compatibility pack installed.

How do I open an Appleworks Draw (.cwk) in Mac OS X 10.5.6

AppleWorks was a great program. I miss some of it's features. But there isn't anything that is going to open them up to edit them, other than appleworks. You need to convert them into something else that will work for you. I agree with the other solution that putting them into a PDF format would work. You could then open them with Adobe Illustrator, and convert them to that format.
I have heard that EazyDraw can open them, but I have not worked with it.
I know this may be a stale question, but I can offer my services to convert these files for you: jbarnhart@minespress.com

AppleWork 6.2.9 crashes everytime starting points tries to open.

I would see if there are any commands in Terminal (Mac equivalent to Command Prompt) that could do it.

Have you tried repairing disk permissions? Go to the Utility folder in Applications and start up Disk Utility. Click on the second icon at the top left, then click on Repair Permissions. Repair Disk at the bottom far right will be grayed out.

If that does not correct the problem:

Quit AppleWorks.
Go to your user/Documents folder, and remove the AppleWorks User Data folder, put it in the trash, and empty the trash.
Do the same to your user/Library/Preferences/Appleworks folder
Do the same to the com.apple.appleworks.plist
logout and log back in as the same user. (not really necessary but I like an almost fresh start)
Open Appleworks, and make a NEW document and try to save it.
Open an existing document and try to save it.

If either of these will not work, let me know.

Typing lag

I dont normally work much with mac's, but are you able to type fine in office- word for example? Is the computer slow normally, even without running programs? What it could is that you have to much stuff on your computer taking up space. Try to put all your photos on dics or on an external hard-drive and then get rid of them off yr computer, also get rid of any music files that you may have stored- have them on CD's as well. This should fix the problem, but if not, uninstall any unessesary programs. Hope this can help... be interseted if it does... get back to me if you can!
