its what we in the business call "refrigerator cancer" they are rusting form the inside out. there is not repairing them and not worth the cost of replacing, you can take them off and spray them you might get a little time outta them. reason it happens is the insulation used years ago was fiberglass and would trap moisture between door and liner, eventually rusting through.. new refrigs are insulated with blown in poly-styrene. they don't hold moisture.

SOURCE: Repainting doors on whirlpool white refrigerator

oowwwww!!! thats what we call in the refrig biz "refrig cancer" the door itself is actually rusting from the inside out. the older refrigs used fiberglass insulation inside the doors which has a tendency to hold moisture, and overthe years rusts through. the new door use blown-in poly styrene foam far less likey to hold moisture. That being said you could remove the door lightly sand and paint, can of krylon enamal aint should do it, at least for a little while anyway

SOURCE: sub zero paint peeling

I have found no fix for this. I have tried repainting but it is not long before the paint is falling off again. Get ahold of sub-zero and tell them of the problem.

I have rust on front door of Kenmore side-by-side fridge. Unit is not that old. Can I sand, prime and repaint?

You can but be aware if you use spray paint, the over spray may get into the ice box and onto the liner. Been there done that. It would be best to remove the doors but that is a lot of trouble. If you use a high quality paint like BLP brand rustoleum and thin it a bit using paint thinner, you can actually brush it on but you will still be able to tell it was brushed on. Some people do like that though, looks antiqued. To me its tacky. No pun intended.

Yes for sure, youmust first remove all the rust, remove the beadings gaskets and use a primary coat of rustproof primer.

Now use some tinkering with levelling and cleaning with water paper before you can paint with a good coat of food grade paint.fit back the gaskets, wash the fridge with soda and soft detergent
finally polish and wax ,

You can clean off using a green scrubbing bad and some brasso all at wall mart then buy a can of spraypanit and spray it with food grade paint by Krylon paints also at wal mart. The paint will seal it and keep it from comming off.
