Yes , the operating software can be loaded from a link or from a USB pen-drive or card but the important factor is that a genuine OS is required from only the one supplied with the product key.

Yes you can..! there are two ways you can do it one is to download it from the microsoft website or
if you have an .iso of the program.. a ".iso" is basicly a virtual copy of the disk that can be mounted with the use of a virtual disk drive like poweriso or alcohol120 to name a few.
so to put it simply an "iso" is equal to cd/dvd and alcohol120/poweriso is equal to a cd/dvd rom

Use a computer with a CD drive and copy the installation CD files to an USB flash memory drive, then insert this USB flash drive into your HP notebook and install Windows using this USB flash drive.

If you take the hard drive out, can the laptop boot from its DVD drive? If the laptop can boot up from DVD drive, then you need to reformat the hard drive before you install the Windows 7 using your DVD drive.

Check the BIOS to see if you can make the USB as the first boot device, if you can then you will be able to install XP from the USB flash memory stick.
The reason why your XP installation failed is because in most older laptops, the USB port does not work until Windows XP has been installed.
Your hard disk may have an Windows XP install partition that you can access to reinstall Windows, provided you have not deleted this partition.

cd/dvd rom is probably not working ,try using a lense cleaner disc if that doesn't work it's cheap enough to just install a new drive DVD/Rw as they are about £20.00 new.

How to format notebook without cd room

There are a few ways you can do this.
First would be to obviously get an external cd-rom. Im assuming you dont want to do that... Second, you could use another computer to put a copy of an operating system on a USB stick. You could then boot from the usb stick:

Alternately, you could install ubuntu from a netinstall, but that will not get rid of windows. It will just give you the ability to boot ubuntu in case windows is corrupted. http://wubi-installer.org/

DVD RW DVR-K16 does not recognize blank DVD-R

I have a Pioneer DVDRW DVR-K16, in a sony dv81114Notebook. Running Windows XP. It cannot play dvd's and cd's, It will recognize blank CD-R's but when I insert a DVD-R it say's no disc installed. I have firmware version 1.15.

Hi,
The windows vista DVD that you have is an OEM and not a retail windows vista copy. If your friends computer is a non dell system, you would not be able to install it on his computer in the first place. If its a dell computer purchased before 2007 , it will not install.
In all other conditions it would install without any problems
