If both lights are flashing, it means the Waste Ink Pads in your printer are saturated with ink and the waste ink ("protection") counter has exceeded its limit. The Waste Ink Pads should be replaced as soon as possible. You can overcome this problem temporarily by using the SSC utility - download from

http://www.ssclg.com/epsone.shtml

and reset the Protection Counter. This will stop the lights flashing and restore normal operation.

However, remember that eventually ink will overflow from the waste ink area and make a dreadful mess, so you must change the waste ink pads before this happens. This requires the disassembly of the printer. A copy of the service manual is available from a number of sellers - just Google "Epson C46 Service Manual". You will often find them for sale very cheaply on E-Bay. If you decide to have a go at replacing the ink pads yourself, report back and I will provide further help.

The problem that you are having is that the printer has reached its end of life. The waste pads inside the unit will need to be replaced with new ones and the unit will need to be replaced. Estimated cost will be $65 - $85.00

Says parts need replacing but they dont how do I get the printer to work

If the error message reads parts inside the printer are at the end of its service life, and both red lights flashing alternately while power light is off, it is an indication that the waste ink pad is full and needs to be replaced. This part is not user replaceable so you need to take in the printer for service.

Check for epson status monitor : General error or reach end life service ? Flashing alternately mean printer need to reset waste ink counter.

I have an epson stylus photo R200. It has stopped working and has alternate red flashing lights. Error message says serviceable parts are nearing end of life. How do I get it to carry on working?

I'm not sure about the servicable parts. You might want to contact Epson.

I have seen "parts are nearing the end of life" which applies to the ink pads that absorb excess ink. In that case, the printer needs to be replaced or serviced by Epson or an independent service provider. If you just get the ink pads serviced, it may still fail soon. Then you can run the resrt utility. For more information and the reset utility: http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/InkPadsForm.jsp?cookies=no&com.broadvision.session.new=Yes

I hope this helps.

The status of my printer (epson stylus c45)is idle. There's this yellow exclamation point before the message-Service Required then...inside the dialogue box it's written that Parts inside your printer are...

You will need to get it serviced at an authorized Epson Repair shop as the parts that are at the end of service life are not user servicable. With the price of printers today it would be cheaper to buy a new one with updated technology than to try and have this one refurbished. Hope this helps.

Lights flash alternately and printer won't work at all

Hi Andrew,

This problem is not so much a pre-determined "buy a new printer" type conspiracy but simply the printers internal workings reaching a trigger point where it believes the waste ink pads in the base of the printer are close to full.

Net result is that the printer wants to have the equivalent of a nappy change.

You can easily fix the issue by resetting the waste ink counter using the SSC tool

You will also want to think about whether it's worth installing an external waste ink tank or simply cleaning out your printers pads and then putting them back in yourself. For either option you'll need to locate a service manual for it and then go from there.

If you want or need more information on waste ink issues with the Epson inkjet range then wasteink.co.uk is a good starting point.

Hope that helps.
