Question about LG DU-52SZ61D TV
I'm new to this site so i hope I'm doing this properly. I posted a response to what you wrote yesterday, and it showed up as a comment. Now I noticed the ask me button. I apologize if this is not how I should do this.
Anyway, after checking the things you suggested yesterday, I can stand by the guesses I made in my comment. The color wheel is fine, the light is probably bright enough, but even if it wasn't wouldn't account for the brighter strip on the right side I imagine.
I looked further into the chassis of the set last night and I have to say whoever worked on this set was either lazy, incompetent, or both. Every screw holding the cassis down and the power supply board to the chassis was gone except for one - a large headed, small shafted bolt holding the chassis to the base of the case. It appears there should be at least one more of these large bolts, in addition to several coarse thread screws holding the various sub components together. Still, the various components were in the right place, as there are dowel pins and guide that ensure correct alignment. These were the only things keeping the guts from flopping around the set.
This leads me even further to believe the problem is some sort of obstruction or misalignment in the optical path. I suspect when the light engine originally went bad, it was not repaired under warranty by a technician as the previous owner claimed, but rather he tried todo it himself and badly botched the job. He said it worked fine after, until it was bumped, but it's entirely possible it never worked right after the "repair". At least it seems he got the engine installed right electrically, since the set does work and has the visible but dim picture as stated.
I plan to pull the chassis out, look for problems then replace it correctly with new screws. I need a service manual to reliably do this however. servicemanuals.net has a downloadable manual for the RU-52SZ61D for $15.99. From what I've read the only difference between that and the DU set I have is mine has the HD tuner and cable card slot. Hopefully everything else will be the same, especially the exploded view diagram and parts list if needed. Unless of course you might know where I can get the manual specific to my set?
Do you have any tips or other information for me before I start? i really appreciate your help so far. I'm really hoping to fix this set myself as I've had several unexpected expenses lately and money is rather tight for the time being.
Thanks again, very much!
BTW, if you need to contact me directly, you may do so at david@NOSPAMonsitecomps.com Obviously remove the nospam part.
I was working on a projection TV the other day and I am wondering if this set has filter mirrors? Filter mirrors are mirrors that filter out all colors but one and the use the combination of the colors to produce a luminance light( white light ) which is projected along with the RGB lights. This might be the problem that is occurring here if the mirror that reflects the luminance light is damaged it would still show the color picture but without luminance. This is just a thought that hit me. I'll post this to the other posting also.
I hope this is of help to you,
